SuperStorm 2010 Rolling Blackouts

Oh, nice. So it's an issue of semantics while people shiver and hospitals are forced to delay surgical procedures. Here's a discussion about the difference between the two terms: www.wisegeek.com/what-is-load-shedding.htm

:) and when it happens at 5:46 am when I'm still asleep and everything is already turned off (ok i have too many brick transformers plugged in), I don't have warning or a chance to do anything about it. However, when so many plants go offline at once, whaddya gonna do.

Just sit there and take it like a man. LOL ;D

So it was the "new" and "modern" plants that failed in the cold weather.....

Let's see... weatherization for a power plant.... not exactly Top Secret information ! I guess the PUC better contact power generators up north to fugure out how to weatherize new plants, and pass that info with regs along to the new power plant generators here in Texas.

Of course ERCOT can do a better job at communicating. I hope the Texas Legislative hearings on this issue will get things straightened out, and clear beyond any doubt !

We PAY professionals in the field of power plant management "to think ahead", to do all kinds of "what ifs...." Now, they can't think of everything in advance.... but..... cold weather events --IS-- one of the things that they could've / should've completely thought through.

When the power went out, I was watching TV. It was before dawn, and the result was complete darkness. After grabbing the flashlight, and lighting some candles, I put 4 "D" batteries in a lantern. But, I could not find my Radio Shack transistor radio. I had put it safely away the last time I used it, which was several years ago. It is still safe somewhere in the house.

I could have loaded up one of the portable radios with "6" C or D batteries, but I didn't have that many of those, so I just waited, and eventually the power came back on in 15 minutes. If the power hadn't come back on, I would have got out the emergency "hand crank" radio, but that early in the morning, I just did not feel like cranking up the radio !

Last week, I went to Fry's and purchased a new AM/FM Pocket transistor radio, a SONY ICF-S10MK2, which operates on 2 "AA" batteries. For $9.99, it fit the bill for something quick and easy to get going. 8)

I also purchased at Fry's, a digital AM/FM/SW radio for $12.99, that also works on 2 "AA" batteries. But I'm taking it back, as the case is not a secure fit... only one screw holds it together, and the sides bow open as you're handling it. The other negative, is that to install the 2 "AA"s end to end, requires a herculean amount of force. It's difficult. And for something that I need to put batteries in, in an emergency, that is not acceptable.

The model I will be taking back to Fry's is the COBY CX-CB91. :(

I have an older SONY digital AM/FM radio, but it is a headphone (earbud) only unit.
