Just heard yesterday that "Sports Beat" is moving back to WTKB starting on Monday. Heard they are also moving studios back to Milan. What's the scoop on this situation?
It was announced on the morning show today that WTKB and Supertalk had been sold. The changes take effect Aug. 31. According to what was said on the two stations, James Wolfe is buying Supertalk and changing the format to Urban Gospel, and a group headed by Stevie Ray Hemann, who works for Grace now, is buying WTKB. The format sounds as if it's going to be news/talk and CCM, like a combination of the two stations. I don't know how that will work, unless the CCM is being used for filler between talk shows. Somehow it won't surprise me if CCM is eventually phased out. I'll probably post more comments later when I have more time.
Yep! WTKB 93.7 will move soon back to Gibson CO. it will still play CCM music with Milan High school sports and sportsbeat with Robin Cude. Steve Hemann is the Gen.Manager for the group Solid Rock Broadcasting. Right now only four employees! The station will be heavy on Gibson CO again!and oh yes that is the Steve Hemann that did time at WBBJ TV Jackson. Dave McCulley went back to WIGH 88.7 FM in Jackson,TN an American Family station.
as for Supertalk they say James Wolfe aka Superwolfe has bought the WTNE 97.7FM and it will go some type of Gospel, bet Johnny Shaw at 94fm likes that alot! Soooooooooo if you like Steve Hemann join them Monday morning on 93.7fm and if you like Dave McCulley join him Monday morn on 88.7fm and if you like Superwolfe see whats on 97.7fm the choice is yours! Don't like any of them then just put in a good CD.
I take it that Grace is getting out of the CCM format at all their stations. They changed 93.9 in Selmer to Southern Gospel last year after K-LOVE came in, and with the plans to move 94.5 in Dickson closer to Nashville I won't be surprised if it changes to SG as well.
I actually have mixed feelings about the changes. Ever since 93.1 came on in the early 90's I thought they should have been doing something with CCM, even if it was just on a part time basis. I'm not sure exactly when Grace bought 93.1, but I was told in talking to people at the station as far back as 2000 that there were plans to buy a second station for a CCM format. If they had been able to do that sooner they might have had more success. Instead it was 2005 when The Dove finally came on, well after K-LOVE had come into West TN, and it probably hurt their chances because of that. I'll give them credit for trying though, and I'll definitely give them credit for being honest with the listeners when both stations were sold. They didn't slip the changes in with little or no advance notice like most stations do.
I'm taking a wait and see attitude toward the changes at 93.7. I hope that they won't eventually drop CCM completely, although it has already been said that there will be more news, talk, and sports. I just hope the changes will be for the better.
Today was the first day for 93.7 with the new owners. The station is called Victory 93.7 and the music is basically the same AC CCM format as before. The morning show with Steve Hemann and Gail Gustavson was more talk than music, but part of that might have been because of it being the first day. The rest of the day was all music that sounded voice tracked, and Robin Cude is still doing the afternoon drive time and Sports Beat. So far it looks like the only real change might be with the morning show being more talk, more local high school and college sports, and the Gibson County emphasis. I hope this will work out well.
Like I said earlier Grace deserves credit for being honest with the listeners and also for selling to someone who would keep the CCM format, although with more talk and sports. Most other CCM stations that have been sold in West TN (Including Memphis) have either been bought by K-LOVE or changed to other formats, and in many cases with no regard for the listeners.
I tuned in for a while to 93.1 and Brad McCoy is doing the same show there that he did on 93.7, except for the change for him back to Southern Gospel. I'm not a big SG fan, but I hope he does well.
Tomorrow is the first day for the Urban Gospel format for 97.7. Although I'm not a regular listener to it, I hope it does well. I've never been a big fan of FM news/talk, but I guess that 97.7 came in last in the glut of FM news/talk stations in the Jackson area. Urban Gospel isn't being done in NW TN, so maybe this will reach listeners looking for that type of format.
