surprise---Q105

I'm ready for it. it's been a long draught. JOJO Kincaid makes the old Q staff sound like WNEW MOR jocks. I guess you can't have 2 JOJO's on one station.

Man...how fast can we turn on people who have been entertaining you in this market for over 30 years by listening to an aircheck of someone from 20 years ago...with friends like that, who needs enemys?

As an outsider , I have no knowledge of the dates of airchecks, especially of somebody I never heard of before. I was really shocked and dismayed when Marvin Boone was fired. Comparing the old staff to MOR personalities is not necesarily negative. Next to this JOJO guy, Dan Ingram, Harry Harrison, and Dandy Dan Daniel sounded like MOR. I also said somwhere that I didn't see how those fired from Q could not have performed well in a slightly faster version. Considering I was fired by letter, I don't see how I could be unsympathic. And I wasn't fired by CBS, but by a large not-for-profit social service agency with facilities all across the USA claiming to have a heart.

Given that Marvin and Mike Reeves are gone,
I was hoping that CBS would keep it live and not pull a New Eagle. As I said, back in the day when someone was let go, they could show up cross town pretty fast. Unless COX goes live and local on the EAGLE, the DOVE, and the POINT, I assume you guys will be looking elsewhere. We are not rejoicing that anybody got fired, only that it appears that they will not go automated jukebox yet. And if they are for sale, who wants them? Cumulus? Bonneville? I would be incredibly happy to tune in Monday and find the DOVE is now Dick Ring, Marvin Boone, and Mike Reeves with a format like WLTW in it's inception.

If you really want to see what the listeners of Q105 are saying about what happen last Friday...check out www.tampabay.com and type in Mason Dixon. The blogs after the story are 13 pages long if you print them...and they are pissed about it. Q105 will be lucky to pull a 2 share for the winter book if those blogs are any indecation. You should check it out...if not for anything else, just to see what the listeners that aren't radio nuts like us are saying about it. Believe me...it's worth the time to read it and maybe put your two cents worth in on that one too. Hopefully, those that were fired will catch on at Cox (and they would be crazy not to grab those guys just for the instant name recogintion it would give them). And should they catch on at COX...CBS beware...those guys already know your plan and will focus all their attention on you, just as Bubba has on Clear Channel. Cox could come out the winner in all of this. With those fired from CBS to go after CBS and Bubba to go after Clear Channel. If I were CBS, I would be very afraid of what they have just done to them selves.

If CBS took Q105 apart because it had a better book than their own WQYK----------I'd call that as nutty as picking Sarah Palin for VP . Look how that worked out.

I know there are a lot of "pros" on this board who would beg to differ but, I do believe you're on to something here unemployed air talent. I've been reading through the other threads and I know that many on here feel that cox isn't going to jump on the Qs loss because of finances or whatever else. Ok...consider this for a moment...Cox was low on money when they brought Bubba on board...now they're seeing a station that was once about to breath it's last breathe become new again. What's not to lead one to believe they may try to do the same by picking up the Qs loss talent? Hypothetically speaking if Cox DOES pick up the loss talent I doubt as MsMusicRadio believes that they will do anything with WDUV, the DUV is Cox's baby that has produced the numbers for years...and as the ole saying goes why screw with anything that's already good. I think though that a few of the loss talent on both The Point and The Eagle would be just the boost that Cox needs to position themselves as the number one cluster in the area.

I know you pros think it's unreasonable but, it would seem to me that the management over on 4th street doesn't seem to mind taking a risk on other managements imbecilic decisions. They've already profited from one such decision by the Gandy management what makes you think they wouldn't do it on one of the Koger managements decisions?

Some things you should know about JoJo Kincaid...

First and foremost, don't let the resume fool you- he's a Florida boy, grew up in Gainesville.

His list of stations in his career is composed of the cream of the crop over the years. He's been in New York, Boston, Miami, Detroit, L.A. (afternoons at K-EARTH 101 for a few years) and San Francisco. I worked with him a LONG time ago, in St. Louis. I've known JoJo for almost 35 years- and he is still such an incredible talent that I never miss his show when I'm in the same town he's in. I'll be doing the internet thing for his debut, since I'm in Northern California.

JoJo Kincaid is like no one else on the radio. That YouTube thing? He's like that EVERY break, EVERY day. I have been in awe of JoJo since before we ever met, and I still am.

Oh- one other thing- he's a great guy to work with.

I made a post at tampabay.com and thought I would put on here as well. I drove here from Pittsburgh, and the first local station I heard was Q-105 ... Mason was playing Aretha Franklin's "Freeway." That was in the 80's and I've been listening ever since. For Christmas that year, my sister-in-law bought me the Q-Zoo cookbook (I used to looove Pat Brooks' Piiiiink Panther Juice). I've always been a radio fan and it seems that Mason & Crew, or Mike Reeves or Marvin Boone were always on the air at some memorable times of my life. That's what the "suits" who did the firings don't understand. I think that if they had talked to some real listeners, they would have learned that the interaction between the on-air crew, and their interaction with callers, as well as joke jingles with local flair, and our nostalgic connection with having grown up with these guys, are all things that kept us tuning in. Nicki Cruz (sp) was good at the news, but seriously (and I mean no disrespect), she has all the life and charisma of a mollusk - yet she has a show and Mike Reeves does not. I am disappointed with "the new Q," and anxiously await seeing the Q Crew show up on another local station line-up in the New Year!

Is it just me or does JoJo Kincaid sound alot different than that 20 year old aircheck someone posted? I think it's an insult to JoJo Walker who has been in this market for 28 years to bring in someone with the same first name and make it sound like he's still there to certain extent. Most people will think that JoJo Kincaid and JoJo Walker are one and the same...and believe me, they are not! JoJo Walker sounded much better than JoJo Kincaid on Q105. I wonder how many hate calls they are getting? And Scott Walker the PD in Mornings is the worst, what a pucker of a jock! No wonder he's been fired so many times...he SUCKS! I think that he'll do for Q105 jsu what he do for WOMC...take it right down the tubes. Mason's last trend as PD was #6 25-54, # 3 35-64 and # 5 12 plus. I'm willing to bet that Scott Walker can't even come colse to those rating! Since he left WOMC (or was fired, which he was) tried at #15. When was hired, they were #10! He only know one way to go...and that's DOWN!
I hope that the old Q jocks catch on at Cox so they can help bury Scott and the rest. Maybe we can get back, the original JoJo and not the imation one that they have on Q105 now!

I would agree that he doesn't . It could be that he is just older. Dan Ingram lost a lot before he left WCBS. Poosibly Q106 was just running things faster. Q105 seems to operating at the same pace it did before. Listen to WOMC or KRTH to hear the difference. I'm not saying that one way is better. It depends on the market I guess. I was expecting a much faster pace with CKLW type jingles. I think just trying the same thing with new people is risky. I was hoping for something that didn't seem to happen. They could have kept the same people as nothing else seemed to changed. At this point I would agree it is a step backwards.

any viable rumors about the old Q people turning up again?

JOJO just turned it and was puking into the music. Guess he must be reading this running critique. I learned a new term

I hear that if Cox were to add a personality to WDUV (which I highly doubt) it would be Jack Harris who is currently on the list of the 40+ people to be released from Clear Channel/Tampa in January during the Clear Channel $300 Million Nationwide cutbacks.

Perhaps by posting this here, Clear Channel might reconsider Jack to prove me wrong - though I doubt it.

I already miss Q-105. On last night's drive home, and this morning's drive-in - I listened to the abomination that is now Q-105. I'm sure that these guys conducted market surveys or something before cleansing the station ... but I repeat that I do not understand how/why they got rid of this town's favorites. If I read the numbers reported here correctly, then Mason's show was #3 in the target age group. What was wrong with being number #3? Heck, Glenn Beck is #3 and they are darn proud of it. Being #3 isn't bad when you take a look at nos. 1 and 2 and how long they have had a hold on those slots.

Any way, back to what I heard driving to and from work. I really did give them a try. I guess I don't understand why "JOJO" feels the need to yell everything he says. Is that supposed to infer "youth?" It is possible to be energetic without being loud and spastic. Same thing goes for that Scott Walker guy who is "sitting in" for Mason this week. I find his approach to being energetic quite annoying. Again, this stems from what they perceive the listening audience's wants to be vs. what they really are. Somebody who understands the Tampa market knows better.

Oh, how I hope the Q folks land at another station ... provided it doesn't conflict w/any non-competes ... that may or may not be a problem.

If Clear Channel is cutting, what does that mean for the Nancy & Chris show, as well as MJ's morning show? I would think they could let MJ go and save enough money to build a new facility!

There was a span of time this year where I really liked Q 105 when they were playing a lot of 70s music and then had those Super 70s weekends. There was even some real variety and they were playing songs that haven't been heard as much as the other usual ones. They were the perfect station, IMO, and I remember thinking how I hope they keep doing it. Now, it's back to the same old mix of the usual 60s, 70s, and 80s songs we're all familiar with. At least they don't take it as far as the Point. Other than the few 90s songs they added in recent years, it seems like the same 80s songs when ever I tune in.

With ALL the music that was out in the 60s through the 80s, why do oldies stations and classic rock stations keep playing the same small rotation of select songs and never play the huge multitude of all the other songs?

There are so many past hits, number 1 songs, and even number 1 songs by well known artists that we never hear anymore.

Why?

Just on the slim chance that any of the bigwigs read the messages here..I don't have a contract and could go to work tomorrow and would gladly do it just to kisck CBS's Ass for what they did!

Not only did I lose Marv, and Mike, and Jack, but the suits at Viacom are threatening my 3 year childchild with losing Dora the Explorer and us grown-ups with Jon Stewart. After trying the New Q , I think they did make it worse. If they are trying for a high intensity Drake like thing------------this ain't it guys. I really think it is gone and they just fell back into the pack. I expected a lot more.

Continued: The new Q compared to the old Q was like KQV compared to WHK. They were a lot alike, but when you drove to cleveland, WHK just seemed off, although there was no obvious reason
