Surprised that there was no KABC 810 am San Francisco?

My understanding is that the late great Mr. Armstrong pronounced it "Lew-isss" becuase he was (emphatically) Not French. That was a bit of a thing to be clear about back in Nawlins back in the day, I hear.

I would think a guy named Armstrong wouldn't have much trouble making people believe he wasn't French - especially in a city full of Batiestes, Roubidouxs and Malveauxs

What's fascinating about Louis Armstrong's contribution to jazz is that it wasn't so much a black contribution as a Jewish contribution. His foster parents were Jews. They bought him his first horn and encouraged his lessons. They took him to synagogue all the time. And listening to his early recordings, he's closer in style to big band leaders like Abe Schwartz and Arthur Pryor than to any black (or French) bandleaders.
