Surprised

That no one commented that WDAE is no longer "The Sports Animal" and now is using the brand Sports Radio 620 WDAE. In my opinion a smart move.

If you make a slogan per the carriage of a signal, WDAE truly is an animal, heard from New Orleans to maybe Ft. Myers. Even their HD buzz can be heard to the Gulf Coast....

cd

For what it's worth -- and that may be nothing -- the "Animal" logo and branding are still on the station's website, even if they're not using that particular imaging on air. Might simply be in a period of transition.

The fact they are not using "Animal" after so many years and losing it now, is revealing their nervousness about 98.7.

When you start showing that nervousness over the air, it is just a matter of time...

Not nerves..just tightening it up...you have to evolve and protect against competitors. As long as they are the home of The Rays, Lightning, and Bucs they have the upper hand. Secret is not to over react. Competition makes you better and, in my opinion, they are better.

I don't know about tightening it up...they're losing Rome, albeit to the lesser of the two "Fan" signals on 1010...unless Fan runs 1010 on FM HD.

Does this mean Colin Cowherd shows up after Ron and Ian, followed by Van Pelt and whomever?

If they don't run "Mike and Mike", they'd be one of the few ESPN stations not being forced to clear it...and, God help us , does this mean they have to run NBA on ESPN?

Agree on the NBA - that would be annoying, but not much worse than anything Fox Sports puts out that 620 runs now.

I personally don't think losing Rome is that big of a deal. Maybe I'm naive, but that show was played out 5 years ago. They should put Fenton on middays and let him lead into Duemig. Their contrast of styles would juxtapose well, imo.

What took them so long?

ESPN Radio to DAE has quietly been in the works for a long time. CC Management has been dicking FSR around for quite some time. Telling stories, not returning phone calls, playing games, etc, which is actually pretty typical of how DAE management works these days.

Question is.....what does FSR do now with nowhere to go in the Tampa Bay market? You'd think that JT The Brick would be attractive to someone here, no?

Disney does not want to own stations anymore. The leasing agreement with Emmis with New York's 98.7 makes sense as opposed to ditching their Radio Disney on 1560.

If 620 is going ESPN, I wonder if it won't be a similar New York deal even though it is an AM station - where Disney controls the programming and only leases the frequency from Clear Channel. In this way, they still keep Radio Disney on 1380, and they effectively have 2 frequencies. Clear Channel keeps the frequency.

WHBO AM 1040 Tampa Bay and thier sister station WHOO AM 1080 Orlando (both) are flipping to NBC Sports Radio Monday 10/1/12
NBC is a shell of the Network they used to be.

With that being said, I think it is interesting how the ugly, red-hair, step-child of entertainment known as radio is attracting the attention of all these Networks that have put so much money in T.V. AND had abandoned radio years ago.

1040 will be short lived with NBC Sports, though.

Aren't all the nets not what they used to be?

This revival for network radio isn't due to them discovering programming aptitudes of radio... but have realized it as a national clearance platform. It is not and will not be a chase for ratings. It can't. How could stations with such little physical reach like 1010 and 1040 expect to be competitive for audience?

But the networks can tell a potential advertiser they're on in 50 markets. Doesn't matter the the given station in a given market is a pea shooter.

Well, yeah. It's 1040!

<sigh>..ok kids, let's reboot, and feel free to fill in the gaps here.

The NBC Radio Network officially died some years ago, merging with Mutual Broadcasting. The remnants were scooped up by Westwood One, which was CBS (Sam Litzinger and Gary Nunn are still with CBS Radio News)

Westwood One is now Dial Global, which does run NBC "News" Radio, not to be confused with NBC Radio News.

NBC Sports would do better on either an FM or another AM that can be heard outside of Pinellas after sundown.

FSR dug themselves a hole, I think, by not taking advantage of all that FOX Sports...specifically the TV Network and FSN/FCS had to offer.
