So, what was Sunny 106.5 in Myrtle Beach is now "The Wolf", a new country station.
That is all well and good, but why on earth would they go with "The Wolf" monicker when 96.9 The Wolf from Charleston blares in loud and clear in Myrtle Beach?
 
From what I have heard, Sunny will not have local DJs. It looks like the company has decided to spend the money competing with Gator 107.9 in the country arena. There are really no other "oldies" stations on the Grand Strand so Cumulus decided to put that format on the weaker signal and use the stronger signal for competing with Gator.
I have listened to Sunny some this morning and the one thing I have noticed is they are playing more 1980s music it seems.

As far as 106.5 The Wolf is concerned, they are doing the same thing 96.9 The Wolf did which is to play 1000 songs in a row before the first commercial is played. Does anyone know how long it took 96.9 to play 1000 songs? I want to win the $1000 106.5 is giving away to the correct caller when the first commercial is played.
 
I stand corrected. Sunny 103.1 does appear to have local announcers which raises the question, why did they get rid of the ones they had? There is someone on at midday doing all request lunch. The station really doesn't sound good. The commercials and the DJ are much lower volume-wise than the music.
 
That is true Sunny should of never gotten rid of their djs. It sounds like its the True Oldies Channel as I heard them saying True Oldies. Also this morning after 8am they had some morning show on and they were country songs playing current ones and before the songs played they said Sunny 103.1.

As for 106.5 The Wolf, they fade in a out which the same was when it was Sunny. Also why call it The Wolf, you got 96.9 The Wolf coming in from Charleston, SC. I guess no one over at Cumulus Myrtle Beach knew about 96.9 The Wolf. Anyways good luck trying to compete with Gator 107.9 which sounds great as always and lets not forget about Eagle 92.9 which we can also hear in Myrtle Beach and is sister station to Gator from Florance.

The only station Cumulus didn't touch was 98.5 KISS-FM all they did their was make it a Urban AC to compete more with Qantum as Qantum recently flipped The Sound to Q 107.1 Urban AC with Steve Harvey Mornings.
 
OK. Things are very strange on 103.1 in Myrtle Beach. They did move the oldies from 106.5 to 103.1. They have John Boy and Billy in the morning but during the extended local breaks, they play country music, not oldies. They have a midday guy who may or may not be in Myrtle Beach. He takes requests for the lunch hour and gives the local number but that number may be forwarded to another Cumulus station anywhere.
They have Scott Shannon's True Oldies Channel the rest of the day.

Ok here are some of the facts to this Situation. First of all there are other Oldies stations on the strand like WNMB 900-AM in North Myrtle Beach, and WGTN 1400-AM Georgetown. The problem is they do not cover nearly as well as 103.1. Secondly, the Oldies on 106.5 were absolutely without question stomping the country on 103.1 in the ratings. Obviously Cumulus is trying to compete with Gator 107.9 but as far as I am concerned they made a bad move. Cumulus has John Boy and Billy on 103.1 in the mornings, and for some reason country music is still being played on Sunny 103.1 The Grand Strand's True Oldies Channel during the big show from 6-10 each morning.

For all of you Oldies fans out there please listen up. It's bad enough that Cumulus has fired Lou Krieger and Al Conners, as well as moved our Oldies/Classic Hits to a new station. Atleast we still have a station on the FM dial that is designated for Oldies, and atleast it covers Myrtle Beach as well as North Myrtle Beach better than 106.5 did. Don't believe me? Go to radio-locator.com type in WYAK under where it says call letters, look at the coverage map and compare it to WSYN's coverage map.

The only problem I have with the new Sunny 103.1 is infact what is being played in the mornings from 6-10. If Cumulus cannot get the Oldies on 103.1 during John Boy and Billy in the morning, then why don't they move the Big Show over to 106.5? From 10AM until 6AM the next morning, Sunny 103.1 sounds great with 1 local DJ right after John Boy and Billy, and then Scott Shannon's True Oldies Channel.

Folks I am sure that I am not the only one here that dislikes the songs being played from 6-10 during the morning show. I know some of you Country fans out there also like Oldies.

Lets get this problem fixed. Those of you on the Grand Strand with phone books can easily enough look up Cumulus Broadcasting of Myrtle Beach, call them, and inform them that country music just does not sound right on an Oldies station at any time, especially if the station identifies as "Sunny 103.1 The Grand Strand's True Oldies Channel."

And For Everyone, if some of you don't like Oldies at all, fine! I am sure there are other formats on the radio dial that will suit you, but don't bash the Oldies, because I myself and quite a few other people absolutely love the format.

Oldies Fans Please Please Please call or e-mail cumulus of Myrtle Beach and lets get this morning drive situation straightened out atleast with the music.

I agree with you Traditional. They need to get that mess fixed. I should have said there are no other oldies FM stations on the Grand Strand. I live near Conway and the 106.5 signal has always been stronger than the 103.1 signal which is why I thought thye were putting the format with the least competition on the weaker signal.
 
Thanks for your support Sharper. I know there are a lot of country music supporters here on the Grand Strand, and I am not out to attack anyone or what kind of music they choose to listen to. My whole point is this, Oldies was the format on 106.5 for precisely 18 years until the recent flip. Me and several other people had no idea where the Oldies were going when Lou Krieger replied to my e-mail saying that he and Al Conners had been fired, and that the station was going to be restructured. I am atleast very thankful that Cumulus Broadcasting of Myrtle Beach put the Oldies on 103.1. Now someone please correct me if I am wrong but 106.5 The Wolf is Country, Gator 107.9 is Country, 96.9 The Wolf is Country, Eagle 92.9 is Country, 101.3 Double Q out of Wilmington is Country, also 1370-AM WTAB out of Tabor City is Country. This is a total of 6 country music radio stations that cover all or part of the Grand Strand. I just think that people on the Grand Strand that like Oldies are entitled to atleast 1 FM Oldies station that plays Oldies full time, meaning during the morning from 6-10AM and 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Please, I strongly encourage everyone out there that likes Oldies, and wants Oldies to remain on the FM dial along the Grand Strand to call Cumulus Broadcasting and request that they drop the Country music from the new Sunny 103.1 during the morning from 6-10 and play Oldies songs instead. Right when you call Cumulus, there will be a recording, one of the options that the recording lists is the general delivery mailbox. If no one answers at the general delivery mailbox, then please atleast leave a message on their answering machine.

I imagine the country music-in-the-middle-of-the-Big-Show is just another sign that Cumulus is run in a very half-assed fashion.

You can't tell me that thus was so sudden there was no way to avoid this.

At the very least, look at a log, see what songs are going to be played, then find some oldies of equal length to replace them with.

If this is a sign of things to come, I doubt 1) Qantum has anything to worry about and 2) oldies listeners will be let down by Cumulus' inferior product.

So sad....
 
Cumulus has been having problems in all of their smaller markets. It is no surprise to me what has happened in Myrtle Beach. Last year they canned PD Rick Roberts. I know Rick and understand what he had to deal with as a Cumulus PD. They tie your hands and don't let you program I don't know Joey Dee, but, I wish him luck with the Wolf. As far as playing country on the oldies channel, that is more than likely lack of staffing! Cumulus is trying to go private and need to cut budgets. First-up staff! I know a number of great OM/PD's that have been victims of the Cumulus hatchet.
 
I guess that this is what we have gotten in the long run from all of the deregulation and usher in the large amounts of corportate radio that have taken over what used to be really good locally owned radio stations. It is really sad that this has happened and hope that they can get their stuff together really soon.
 
Wabbit Season, I could not agree more with what you said. I left a message at Cumulus Broadcasting's General Delivery Mailbox yesterday, I called the General Manager twice today but he did not answer his phone, so I left 2 messages on his answering machine asking him to call me back. I knew he would'nt, but I thought it was worth a try. At this point, I am just going to backoff. I have tried my best for the past 3 days to talk to someone at cumulus, or atleast try to persuade them with my phone messages to drop the damn country from 6-10 in the morning, and just play solid oldies during the Big Show, if John Boy and Billy must remain on 103.1. I hope some of you out there will continue to call cumulus and complain, but I have college to worry about, and I cannot continue to waste my time with this less than appropriately managed broadcasting company.

I would give them a week and see if they are planning on making a switch for John Boy & Billy to the other station or change out the programming format during John Boy & Billy has this might take a while. My station is traditional country to mordern country mix but I still have to fight with the evening show guy about playing rap,pop, and rock mixed with country music all the time and it's been 10 months since I started him.

This morning I was listening to 103.1, and during the John Boy and Billy Big Show, 60's/70's Oldies were playing with an occasional 80's song mixed in. I don't know if this was origionally planned by Cumulus, or if phone calls and e-mails to Cumulus from listeners caused this to happen. All I can say, is thank you to anyone out there that either called Cumulus of Myrtle Beach, or sent e-mails. I know some people don't like the new Sunny 103.1 as much as the old Sunny 106.5, however the Grand Strand does have a full time FM oldies station again, and I for one can say that I am satisfied.

At least you have the oldies now in the mornings. I still wonder if John Boy and Billy fit that format, but that is definitely a different topic for a different day as well.
 
From what I have been told, John Boy and Billy send their show out over satellite two different ways. One is for country stations and the other is for classic rock formats. Apparently Sunny has now made the switch to the classic rock feed. I do not think JB&B intended for their show to be on a "true oldies" station.

As for 106.5. They now have a morning show with someone named Johnny D. They are emphasizing a "more music in the morning" format. It definitely is not as fun to listen to as 107.9.
 
His name is Joey Dee and at least there is music on a morning show now....Thank God
