First it was McBland doing a 30 minute infomercial on LifeLock. Bruce Jacobs appears to be copying Gerald. This morning, Bruce did a full half hour on "how do you get rid of your headache?" He had a doctor on from a sponsor and talked about going to the doctor's office with one of the station sales guys a few days ago. It was a total commercial. He kept giving out the guy's phone number and website address and talked about how good the company was at getting rid of aches and pains. I thought I was listening to McBland.

Do us all a favor and drop the catchphrases, please.

A]] Who is this "McBland??" Is he replacing the Wall Street Journal Program and Noory on overnights/early morning??

B]]Was this actually an Infomercial, or just Jacobs doing his usual and doing topics that HE wanted to discuss at that time??
(Considering that he did a full 3-hour morning show on Barry Bonds and the homerun record last week, no matter how many of us wanted him to speak of other subjects, it would be no surprise whatsoever if he did this headache segment for the same reason.)

Jack,

The Phoenix radio board has, for at least five years, been the home of about six people who have been saying the same 12 jokes about KTAR radio.

There is a certain juvenile nudge-nudge wink-wink vocabulary that is used here that reminds anyone who has every been around preschoolers of their developmental vocabulary.

Some of the lexicon is obvious, like "McBland" meaning Pat McMahon, an entertainer in Phoenix for nearly 50 years who has achieved more in his career than these board operators wannabes could ever wish for.

Some of their catchphrases are more obscure. "Toaster Talk" refers to a long-forgotten call-in segment that allegedly ran long ago... no one really remember the details ... but it is enough to raise a guffaw of recognition.

KT'R refers to a long-ago KTAR host who didn't enunciate the third call letter very well - a source of endless mirth and amusement.

Their user names bespeak volumes of their originality. One of them has adopted the persona of a comic strip character from 20 years ago, and his friend. Another uses the name of a Phoenix amusement park that went out of business in 1964, and then again in 1976 or so.

At one time, this group was clearly irked that KTAR was not offering the same right-wing goosestep talkradio that crosstown rival KFYI was dishing out through its list of mostly-syndicated talk hosts who couldn't identify the call letters of their Phoenix franchise without liner cards.

Now, with KFYI circling the tank, they have turned onto bitching about their former mothership, much like baby spiders, or the Republican party in California this year.

Someone here used to call this claque the "KTAR Marching Band and Chowder Society" after those quaint groups of old men in New England who sit around a cracker barrel somewhere and chortle at the same jokes for decades.

Same thing here.

And every time, McNary comes on with the same old whine fest about the same old 6 people and never adds any new, interesting posts, just the same old stuff decrying the same old stuff. Endlessly whining, never adding anything, bitching and moaning and insulting posters here.

Which forces me to post the same old stuff about how he just whines about the same old stuff....

BTW, Legend City closed in 1983. McBland was boring then too.

I heard this part of Jacobs' show this morning. It was supposed to be a real interview, but the entire thing was terrible. I couldn't believe Jacobs, of all people, was doing it. It was an absolute infomercial. It sounded like KTAR a few years ago. Jacobs makes fun of survey radio, but this was some of that and even worse. I am now convinced that most of those on the air at KFYI no longer care. They see the writing on the wall and are beginning to blame others and stop trying. Reminds me of what happened at KTAR under their former PD.

Hey, every few months some new face stumbles in here and wonders what all the baby talk is all about. They deserve an answer.

Now, back to the regular format:

"What in the wide world of sports .... 1976 Levi Gremlin ... The Lumberyard signed on 14 minutes late with just carrier and no ID yesterday ... JD Hayworth is soooo lame ... Sports Parklng Lot 620 ... KT'R ... Colon Blow ... Gumpdumpsky ... Nurse Jeff .... Buckeye Media Hut ... Alan Chilcothe ... Buckeye Road tower of power .... blah blah blah.

The Nurse and I wuz wonderin' when good ol Zumahans would resurface. Now we know!

But back to the topic at hand: Bruce Jacob doin' his best Pat McBland impersonation on KFWhyEye. Our take is quite simple...the cliff is fast approaching and the Dudeboss keeps punchin' the accelerator. YIKES!

Hiya Akbar, been busy, but now it's vacation time. I really only came here to see what people in greater Port Hueneme had to say about the Univision payola probe that the US Department of Justice is undertaking:

The legal side of the broadcasting industry is getting more and more interesting to this 3-L.

As I recall, last time I was in here, Rockjock 410 had just opined:

The whole Akbar and Jeff thing was mildly amusing at first. But it reminds me of a 4 year old with an imaginary friend. Cute. But when he's 15 and still talking about his imaginary friend, it's just LAME.

Change your name to "dry-voiced morris hall and kinghorn / air america guy" and get it over with. You, my friend are lame.

I missed your reply to that little nugget.

But I appreciate your take on KFYI about to sail over a cliff. Does this mean you recognize the folly of your predictions about the 620/92.3 split?

Yup. Gonna make a lot of money AND sue your ass for a libelous emoticon.

Nah, just kidding. Maybe.

Better be careful. Broadcast law is going to be very lucrative.

McNary, you got beat up a lot in grade school didn't you?

Bruce doing infomercials is as dreadful as McBland doing them.

Not compelling radio

Just cuz I stole all your punch lines?

Nah, LC, wasn't beat up. But unlike you, my grade school wasn't opened by Gov. Moeur.

Now, it's a beautiful day in Arizona. Leave us all enjoy it.

Best of luck to you. If you want to have an enlightening conversation on media law, talk to Kyu Ho Youm. The man is brilliant! Comm Law w/Prof. Youm was THE BEST class I took at ASU. (Of course, he is now at University of Oregon.)

The new punchline is "acting like a McNary"

I went to Catholic School, I had to deal with the Brides of Christ nun gangs.

Just a couple of quick points of clarification:

"Survey Radio" refers to a host asking a short question and soliciting calls to regurgitate an answer to that question; also referring to segments that are taking calls on certain topics only--thus the word "SURVEY".

I didn't hear the segment this morning, but I heard he was having the guy from AZ Paincenters on... I would find it rather hard to believe that Jacobs would do a Pat McMahon Infomercial type of segment, and given the way people on these boards are, I would have rather heard it than take what someone says here at face value. Nonetheless, if he did, that's sad, if it was a legit interview that came across as a bit of a plug, I don't really have a problem with that.

Last I checked, it's his show and can discuss whatever topics he likes. Imagine that, the Bruce Jacobs show discusses the issues that Bruce Jacobs wishes to discuss.

Nope, aint us. And that guy was pretty P.O.d at you for making the accusation as we recall. Zumahans may have outted the Old Gringo, but not the Doc & Nurse!

Allow us to refresh your rusty memory: A year ago last summer Nurse Jeff and I advised the CCU suits to take one of their lower rated FMs and put KFWhyEye on it. By turning 6~twenty into a Sports Parking Lot, TMISU essentially decimated listening levels on AM. Because KFWhyEye shared so much cume with KT'R AM, the rug has been pulled out from under them. CCU is no longer the 900lb gorilla in the market and they've lost interest in keeping KFWhyEye on top. Meanwhile TMISU have improved KT'R-FM to the point where it is more relevant than at anytime since KFWhyEye moved to 5~Fifty. While the Jurassic tar continues to ooze whenever Pat McBland is on, he is now surrounded by much better content and KFWhyEye is the station on the downward spiral. News stations usually don't win against Talkers in PMD, but thanks to JD Hayworth we think we know where this is one is headed.

Nurse Jeff and I welcome you back to the Valley and hope the dry air removes some of the rust and corrosion caused by being docked too long in Port Hueneme!

You may be right about that, but your act is still as weak as A-1 beer.

...or Rocky Point being considered a World Tour destination on KOOL-FM ;D ;D ;D !
