Susan Banks Leaving WKBW TV

Business First is reporting that Susan Banks is leaving her anchor position at WKBW TV.

Her last newscast is at 11PM on Wednesday, Dec. 13th.

Since Granite's bankruptcy deal means that there won't be new owners, or new management, can anybody blame her?

I expect that Keith Radford will follow her out the door when his contract runs out. It's sad how far Channel 7 has fallen since Granite took over.

Susan Banks isn't the first and will not be the last person to leave broadcasting for another profession. A number of veterans, including yours truly, bailed out of the industry after years of frustration watching countless bean-counters and amateur owners come in and run a station into the ground with their meat-ax approach. Besides the long hours, low pay (for some), working holidays, and constant ownership changes, many veteran broadcasters have departed because they were tired of dealing with incompetent management.

I had the opportunity to talk with Susan Banks years ago and found her to be a very nice person. I wish her well in her new endeavors.

Kudos to Ms. Banks for having the fortitude to get out of broadcasting and start her own business. I'm afraid, as other posters have written, that the trend of veteran broadcasters leaving for other careers will continue do in large part because of the trend of media companies to care more about the bottom line versus the quality of the news product they offer.
