Swap A Spot Network - YES it's FREE!

Hello there! My name is Jennifer and I work for 4 stations in Pennsylvania. I am looking for stations to join our Swap A Spot List. What started out as a source for small market stations to get more voices for production is now a close-knit network of people in radio that share not only Voice Overs but ideas for copy, co-op, promotions, industry issues, production chatter, technical issues, advertising, etc. We would love to add more people/stations/voices to our group!

Right now we have several stations from The U.S., Canada, The U.K., and Spain! (The Spanish Stations are English Speaking). Everything we do is FREE…there is never any charge to swap a script or anything else…we are all here to help each other out. We are always looking for new stations to add to our list! If you are interesting in joining our little SAS (Swap A Spot) Family – please let me know! Below there are a list of questions – if you want to fill it out and send it back to me I will add you to our list and then introduce you to the group and provide you with a list of other stations participating and their contact info. We even have a FREE Private Message Board! I will send you that link when you respond with the info to join. I hope you will join our circle – it’s certainly made a difference for dozens of stations so far!

Hey Jennifer,

My name is Dylan. I'm a news anchor on a talk station in Huntsville, AL. I'm sitting in front of a mic and Adobe Audition from 9:30AM til 5:30PM Monday thru Friday. I was previously Creative Services Director and Imaging Voice of Alternative WLUM in Milwaukee. I can provide a ton of different reads and voices. You can hear some stuff I've done at www.myspace.com/dylanpaulvox

Send scripts to [email protected]

I'll turn them right around from 9:30AM til 5:30PM Central Time M-F

I just want to be sure that I understand what it is that you're doing...

You're GIVING AWAY your talents and services in order that the monolithic corporations you work for can profit even further from your labors? Is that right?

Oh well, you know what your work is worth I suppose. Good luck.

Most of us are in small markets. We help each other out. It's a dry voice VO swap. Those in Large Markets that have dozens of people working at 1 station would have enough people to get the variety in a spot break where as some of the small markets might only have 2 voices available in house. I understand what you are saying but it's not quite like that...at least not for the majority of small (or med) market stations that are benefiting from this network everyday.

As a part of this group...

I give away nothing. It's a barter arrangement. I'm paid to produce X number of spots per week. I could produce them all for this three station group so it's my voice on every ad. Or I could improve the sound of my station by trading my voice-over to another station in the group in return for that person to voice one for me. I do the same number of spots either way. It's a one for one trade.

By the way, the Monolithic Corporation I am employed by is locally owned by an individual who's sitting in his office not fifty feet from me right now and lives within a mile of me in the same town.

By the way part two. I still have every right to "Sell" my voicework and production talents and do so regularly. This little group has done more for me by increasing my network of contacts than I could have with a website.

I can remember the days when small markets had plenty of employees at thier radio stations to take care of production. I know it's NOT the case now and that is really sad!
There's a station (market size somewhere around 125) that I worked for from 1981 to 1992 that had 6 full time jocks, 5 or 6 news people and a production director. Guess how many employees that 100,000 FM has now.....
ONE!
Unbelievable.
And from what I've heard, making a ton LESS than they ever did.

Thanks for the PM Pamela! I left you a VM and Email - Chat with you soon!

I gotta say..even though I try to make a cash living with my product, this is a good idea. There ARE a large number of stations around the country that are owned by single operators, and who would like to sound a little better (read as: more competitive) and additional voices would be really helpful. I have always said that having my voice on someone's station is like having my demo played over and over. There IS value to having one's voice talent on in other markets..you never know who might hear a spot and ask "who is that person" and new work comes our way. I would caution that these spots be use exclusively ON the station(s) they were produced for, and if they are to be played on other stations outside of the cluster, the talent SHOULD be compensated..otherwise there is a deflated value here, and the client is getting the advantage of an "out of market" talent for free. That's not right. In that respect it should be controlled and paid out as it happens. However the idea of spreading talent to other markets and getting talent in return is a great idea that can only improve local radio's impact in small and medium radio towns. And that has to be good for the industry.

Our network continues to grow! We've had several new members this past month...a couple from this board and the others were not necessarily from this board but word of mouth. I want to thank everyone who has joined and hope others will in the future. Thank you all for your support! :)
