Sweet relief - WBBM had their buzzmaster off last night!

With WBBM's hyper-powered IBOC jammer off last night, I was able to listen to a nice, clear signal from WABC. In the past, such a dx catch would have been very ho-hum. But in the age of IBOC pestilence (with CBS Radio being the Typhoid Mary of HD), WABC is now a rarity around these parts. How nice it was to catch John Batchelor's interesting show, which isn't offered around here.

Oh how I hope that WBBM's IBlOCk unit is fried, though that's probably too much to ask! When it's on, it splatters more of the band than anyone else's jammer in this market....

WABC is a rarity anymore down where I am and that's with no local IBOC to block it.

Don't know why it isn't like it used to be only a year or so ago.

WBBM is still by far the strongest of the Chicago stations here.

And WFLA is a couple miles from here but I guess I'm right in the direction of their signal because during the day, I can even hear some splatter all the way the top end of the AM band.

somewhere in Russia there are some former Soviet officials wishing that iBiquity had been
around back in the day to handle their jamming for them

The Chief Engineer at WSM once posted on R-I that as the IBOC equipment break down after the warranty period expires & stations find that it will take thousands upon thousands of dollars to fix these albatrosses, the AM dial will probably start to recover from the sea of hiss it is/was becoming.

Let's hope! :D

It's such an improvement with WBBM's jet engine silenced that it's not even funny. WJR comes in crystal clear from late afternoon onward; WABC is clearly audible and, most importantly, the fidelity of WBBM's signal is remarkably better! The highs are higher, lows are lower and the noise level is through the floor. For those who try to argue that AM HD makes no difference to the local signal, I maintain that they are either deaf or in denial. WBBM is very strong at my location and normally it sounds like garbage - flat and lifeless with a hissing in the background. Now it's rich and clean.

I hope to God that someone from CBS is actually reading this because your station sounds 100% better without the HD crap. Keep it off!!!!!!!!!!

It certainly has helped extend WBBM's reach. I caught it this morning just north of downtown Houston with local KBME right next door at 790. I haven't seen WBBM down here in a long time, especially after Clear Channel installed the IBOC on KBME. Got the time check of 4:36am.

At 2 PM local time on Friday, I was listening to WBBM in Indiana, and they cut away for CBS network news....
the carrier dropped for a split second, came back with the network chime and iboc.
It's probably no worse than before, but it sure seemed like it.
Once again all definition and presence is lost in the sound of a high-pressure air leak.
Tune to the center for maximum mush, or or off to one side for a huge helping of hiss.
Like fecal matter in foodstuffs, iboc continues to offend the sensibilities of those who prefer
products uncontaminated in manufacture and shipping.
All ibiquity employees and contract engineers of this technology deserve to find fuzz, hair and lint in their food
for the rest of their lives. And then be told that these are "within permissible limits".
If money were no object, I'd hire a helicopter to hover over the roofs of ibiquity principal officers, to help them understand
the offense they are committing.

Well said Tom! Yes, I checked last night and the roar was back - as was WBBM's flat listless post-IBOC audio. It's a travesty; put simply, this technology sucks.
