Swingin' 650

The other night (around 5pm), I was scanning through the AM dial, when it stopped on 650, and they were playing Standards/B-EZ music. Does anyone know when this started and how often they are doing it. It sounded great. And, their signal actually sounded half-way decent for a change. I know they are not doing it all the time, because I heard some News/Talk on there the next day. But, I'd like to listen again, if anyone knows anything about it. I can't seem to find a website for them.
 
The music is good. ACTUALLY, since it has been mentioned that its sister FM station KHJZ may be flipping to something, they should put Swinging programming on 95.7 and
turn 650 into Progressive talk.

1. "Progressive" ::) talk won't work in Houston.
2. They're not going to put standards full time on an FM station.
 
This is my first time on the board, so HELLO EVERYONE!

I talked to Ronnie Renfro about three months ago and he said that they were "building a radio station, step by step". They may indeed be going to the all-swing format eventually.
 
Well KIKK would be the logical fit for the format, as I've said all along. While I like Old Chicago's idea with regards to Swingin' 95.7, it ain't gonna happen. If you are looking for a filler format for KIKK whilst moving the Standards to FM, my money (no pun intended) is on Business Radio. From what I've read in other areas of the board, their lease on KXYZ is up at the end of '07. They are going to need a new home, if what I've read is true.
 
As a newbie, fill me in. Is the smooth jazz on 95.7 not cutting it? Or is it that the Swinging sound would be better on FM? And is Biz-Radio really that hign on the listeners list these days. If not, why couldn't they simulcast. Also, How did the oldies of KBME and the Swing of 650 do in the rating books in Houston?
 
rallen: The music format on 650 is dedicated to standards as reinterpreted by current young artists like Michael Buble and Houston's Renee Olstead along with Steve Tyrell, the great Linda Eder and Medeline Peyroux (who sounds fantastically like Billie Holiday) among many others (It could do pretty well on an FM, Buddy, and there's an emphasis on local artists), but it's also salsa, pop-jazz, hard blues, roots music, world music, a little big band and classic artists like Sinatra, Darin, Elvis and Ella Fitzgerald. It's not really like The Wave. When "Big Band" was on KBME it did better than The Sports Animal's been doing, overall. Swingin' 650 may be an acquired taste, but Ronnie's doing something different on Houston radio for a change. And then sit down with your girl and a cool drink and listen to this music. To me, it's more romantic and unique than The Wave or Sunny will ever be.
 
Thank you for the defense of the format Michael. Ronnie is doing a good job with it. Despite all the rumors of KHJZ's demise, it is still making money and hitting its key demos. I don't see CBS doing anything with the format, tweaking it yes, destroying it no.

And, I also think Progressive (not sure what the quotation marks meant) Talk can work on the right frequency. This city has a lot of Democrats and Liberal Independents that would support it. I think it would garner more ratings than 650 is getting right now. The problem is, no one besides KPFT has tried anything of the sort. KTRH had Ed Schultz on for a very brief period, but they hardly did anything to promote it and it wasn't carried live.
