SWITCHER: OPERATE REMOTELY

We're going to need a switcher but in all honesty i've never worked with own. Can you recommend some good options? We are in need of a switcher that get be operated remotely, possibly over the internet (if possible using gotomypc.com) and can be used to switch between live feeds, automation, and possibly satellite.

Thanks! josh

There are a number of companies (Kramer is one of them) who manufacture audio switchers with RS232 Serial control.
These should work fine using Go To My PC to access the computer which controls the switcher.

Look at the Broadcast Tools line (www.broadcasttools.com). Most of them can be controlled by serial commands. A number of popular automation systems are specifically designed to work with their 8 channel switcher, e.g., BSI's Simian, Prophet/Next Gen (whatever they are calling it now).

The Broadcast Tools switchers have been installed almost everywhere I've worked. My understanding is that any automation which can operate the 8x2 switcher can operate nearly any switcher in the BT line.

I LOVE the Broadcast Tools ACS 8.2 plus, it's a wonderful box. It operates off of serial commands, so most automation systems will work well with it. But, you can always just pull up a Hyper Terminal window and give it commands directly too.

Broadcast Tools will work. Also, look for a used Kramer as mentioned above. Many TV stations are dumping them and some are ending up on EBay for a nice price.

If you need a simple, limited input switcher that uses closures, you can also take a look at Henry Engineering. Use one myself.

We have a new used Kramer for station wide switches. We use several 8.2 units to accept closures and make switches. Both work great and sound great and use the Euro type connectors.
