Symetrix 528 vs 528E

Some reports I've read say the 528 sounds better than the E version, yet the E seems to sell for much better money.
Overall it seems this unit isn't the most liked box on the market, but between the two, which one really is better operationally?
I now have one of each, and one needs to go - so which one to keep and which one to sell?

I'm prepared to take a beating on this but... I must say.... IMO I think that the DBX286A sounds better than the 528E. I've worked with the 528E on a few different occasions and wasn't wowed with it. I don't have experience with 528 but 528E seems reliable and solid from an operational stand point. An NCE I done work for has had the 528E in operation for 10-12 years and it has never let them down.

I was once told that the analog audio circuitry is the same in the 528 & 528E. The only difference is that the E has digital controls which in turn use VCA's to control the analog circuits, and thus it should sound exactly the same as the Non-E.

Hi Studio 1, 528 after some known upgrades DIY sound much better from 528E, 528 was use the discontinued MIC IC SSM2015 then come 2017 & last 2019 so for that reason Symetrix must re-design it with now days MIC IC SSM2019 or INA217? and may give a new look to the face plate, also add an digital control of side chain for VCA & that’s all. 528 & 528E did not sound the same.

As ex-user of one modified upgraded 528 I was used as on air mic processor, main processor it was an Optimod 8100/XT2, from 528 I was use only the mic pre because compression & expander did not cover the needs for on air usage, in other words he make problems to the processing unit.
If your purpose is NOT for on air processing then 528 or 528E is OK.

In the last 5 years the place of Symetrix 528 takes the “cheaper” DBX 286A:) that unit is excellent for on air broadcasting usage this makes perfect match with any processing unit, Bob Orban which designed the 286A knows better :) how make the presenter voice sound louder and “commanding” if that is the goal. But that is only my personal opinion. Best regards XFon
