Syndicated listening

I listen almost exclusively to the nationally syndicated N/T station talkers, and have no interest in the local hosts (save for one). In fact, when these hosts have a fill-in, I tend to not be interested in them either. The successful national hosts have that "it" factor going for them. I don't listen to the N/T stations on the weekends all as they have weak, uninteresting hosts/programs many of which are probably brokered. Quite frankly, I don't feel good about this as I want to support "live and local", but I'm just being honest. What is the "it" factor that sets the successfull nationally syndicated hosts apart from much of their local competition?
