Syndicated/Prime DOND in Serious Trouble

Interesting headline from our friends at Hollywood Junket. Supposedly production on both the primetime and daytime editions of Deal or No Deal. Reasons are being boiled down to “working out some issues”. Or in other words, “we’re not happy with how the show is doing; we need to find a way to save it and bring the ratings up. Interestingly they are hearing from insiders that one of the versions may not come back because of low ratings.

Hollywood Junket thinks it’s the daytime version, but I don’t think they understand the ratings difference from daytime and primetime shows. Last Friday’s episode of Deal or No Deal got just a 3.9 rating. It’s been hovering around the 4.0 range more often than not. However, Daytime Deal keeps growing and growing, up to a 1.8 and two and a half million viewers at last count. It’s the top rated new syndicated game show, the top rated new game show since Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, and it’s not that far away from Millionaire’s rating. Only 0.7 behind; not a lot to gain on counting that Deal hasn’t stopped growing.

I think primetime Deal is on its way out more than anything. Ratings are really dragging and word of mouth of Daytime Deal is spreading rapidly. More people are turning over. What’s to blame for primetime Deal’s downfall? I don’t even think it’s overexposure, because it was severely overexposed last season and the ratings weren’t at the levels they are now. I think they just ruined the mystique of the show by giving away the million twice and too easily for one. But my main reason is because of the word of mouth of Daytime Deal. People are seeing a good Deal or No Deal, how it’s supposed to be played, and just an overall more entertaining show. I can barely watch primetime Deal anymore because of how painfully slow and drawn out it is, how annoying the contestants are, and just the circus it’s become. Daytime Deal is the opposite of it. If Daytime Deal somehow is the show that gets axed, if this is indeed true, I’ll just be in utter shock.

Is there any way to save primetime Deal? I really don’t think there are clear ways to without just totally changing the show. I don’t even think just streamlining the show like Daytime Deal would help. I’d just do what the Dutch do. Raise the prize, add some new rounds in, and make it event programming. Make it a special event and a special reason to watch the show. What they have now is stale and not working anymore.

Well if this rumor happens to be true, I would'nt be suprised if both shows go away due to lack of ideas. But how sure is this? I beg to differ that DOND is biting the dust, but I think if this is true, the Primetime version might be ousted, I don't know. However, the syndicated version is doing so well, how in the worls would they can this version? Pyramid anyone?......

The daytime version is doing ok for the syndicated world. It's the primetime one that's hit the skids.

I want them both gone. How this is popular and 1 vs 100 or any other shows when you needed to know the answer to a question were not is beyond irritating to me

Actually, they are in talks with station groups to see whether it will come back, it looks like with the show already breaking a 2.0 in ratings, it's a firm go for season 2.

Daily DOND will be back. No question.

BTW: NObody should refer to the syndicated version as "Daytime DOND" as it airs in early evening or prime access slots in quite a number of markets (Seattle and Boston are two I know of). Alex over at BuzzerBlog still doesn't get it.

From where I live, I get the show via Dish and since I get the San Francisco Bay Area market from the southern part of Sacto, I watch it on KNTV at 12 PM followed by the 2nd episode on WXIA-TV Atlanta at 1:30 PM (4:30 PM ET) and as Joe mentioned it airs on WSBK which is available via Dish Superstations package of which used to be at 6:30 PM before Wheel of Fortune but on 1/5/09, the show moved to 5 PM ET (2 PM PT) on TV 38. Locally in Sacto, KQCA/KCRA airs the show, until 1/25, it aired at 6:30 PM on KQCA and sometimes, it's shown on Sunday Nights on KCRA after Sunday Night Football, but now KQCA moved the show to 11 PM weeknights. I'm sticking with KNTV's airing no matter what.

Syndicated "DOND" runs back-to-back with "Who
Wants To Be A Millionaire" from 7 to 8 on ABC affiliate
WXLV Greensboro/Winston-Salem/High Point. Unfortunately,
they're up against "Wheel Of Fortune" and "Jeopardy!" on
CBS affiliate WFMY.

Since the daytime version of Deal will be apart of the MYTV programming service, does MYTV have a backup if daytime Deal goes away?

What will happen if a station for example WSYX 6 airs daytime Deal at 4 to 5pm and they carry MYTV on 6.2, will they have to cesed airing daytime Deal at 4pm?

Lately I've gotten hooked on the British version of DoND and I can see why it's still thriving, while the American version is flopping.

First, on the British version they really concentrate on the contestants and the contestants-in-waiting who form the two "wings" of the set. You get to know the players long before they're called up to the "crazy chair" to take on the banker.

Second, it's not all methodical and computerized; an actual person plays the banker (although like the American version he's never seen). He will occasionally ask that the phone be passed to the player for a side conversation. Sometimes the offer will change in the middle of the contestant agonizing when the banker "calls back." It's not as predictable as in the American version.

Also, having the contestants-in-waiting as the box-keepers instead of the glitzy models like in the original prime version, gives the show a much more down to earth feeling. It's also led to a bunch of little traditions, like the contestant kissing the player who opens the "1p" box when it shows up.

The host (Noel Edmonds) is a lot wittier and friendlier than Howie Mandel, too. I never liked Howie's hosting job, and looking at the UK version just shows how much better the show could have been with someone else in the host's seat.

The syndicate version Deal is a daytime show. Reruns of Judge Judy and Joe Brown air late night sundays early mondays on WSYX. Does that make them primetime shows? When stations aired Dr Phil and or Oprah nightime, does that make them primetime shows?

willcall:
"Prime Time" is considered 8-11 PM Monday-Saturday and 7-11 PM Sunday , mainly for "Network" Programming..Independents might run Judge or talk shows in "Prime Time" hours, but that does not make them Prime Time Shows, if that makes sense.

No one has to stop running the daytime Deal because of the My Network TV carriage. It's a different, er, deal.

The MNTV episodes will be rebroadcast eps of the 1st and 2nd seasons of the show along with new eps of Are You Smarter Than a 5th grader which will follow Deal on MNTV.
