TALENT IN THE TRIAD

;D It could be I am asking too much. However, I am not that old? Depends of what you call old! I just don't see the talent that I saw in radio when I first started back in th 60's. (Maybe I am Old) Where are the Dan Ingrams, Herb Oscar Andersons, Dr. Don Donavan, Charlie Tuna's, Machine Gun Kelly's , Rick Shaw, Even Imus,on WNBC..The Real Don Steele.. OK jay Thomas, yeah you were OK (kidding) cause I still want my Christmas present.. Anyway Where is the Talent.. I anticipate hearing a lot of responses saying "Gee, Clear Channel didn't give us an opportunity to show talent"..Horsesh*t, It was done before.. Wake Up people and shine.. Let Me hear some of that old time radio.. Clear Channel is Dead! ::)

They still seem to be writing checks.

 If that was directed to me..Hell Yeah.. Like I said before, I was from the Kaplan School of Broadcasting before the Southern, Hilton, Beasley, Bunch and it was always my policy to "Do what I wanted to" and if they didn't like it, they could find somebody else, JACK! Thet normally did, but that was no skin off my back. Most of us old timers probably made more moneyt and saved it back in the late 60's and early 70's in radio from payola, paybacks, commissions than most of you earn in a lifetime. Jocks back then didn't pay for anything, cars. food, movies, drinks, women or whatever you can imagine.. "Man those were the days and I know there are some of my old time buddies out there on this forum that know that!

::) Nope..Got more money than I need now! Don't have to worry about all this chicken S*it stuff.. Clear Channel Sucks etc.. How about yourself Rookie, Where do you work? Attention Shoppers Blue Light Special.. That's what I figured..I've forgot more about radio than you will ever know.. Regards!

What do you think of mine?

Mine comes from the subject line, where I made a typo, in my first-ever email right after my favorite radio station started a web site. My station was standards at the time and switched to an early 40-plus version of Jack targeting the same audience--but of course they didn't like it. ABC standards was their format before and after the experiment, but that satellite format has now changed to a 40-plus version of Jack.

Now, children. It was a good question and I am sure not intended to slight anyone. There is some talent in th Triad market, unfortunately, you don't get to hear the full potential. Way too restricted by corporate radio. Just to name a few:

Angie Ward
Marsha Gann
Carmen
Glenn Scott
Beth Ann McBride (although not in her current role)
Bill Flynn
Jack Murphy

There are a number of others who have great potential and need the guidance of a personality oriented PD. Not sure there are many of them left!

Would have to add Rod Davis to this list. Great list and I agree with it completely. Guys like Glenn Scott, Rod Davis, Bill Flynn and Jack Murphy...you can love 'em, hate 'em, whatever, but they have stood the test of time. They're survivors and the listeners have spoken to their longevity! Pros through and through.

Have any of these jocks other than Murphy ever worked in a Large or Major market?

... and butchering radio stations...

The size of the market in which one has worked has no bearing on the level of talent one possesses! There is a great deal to be said for a person who chooses to remain rather than take an offer in a larger market.

I know Murphy has worked larger markets, pretty sure Flynn and Scott have not.

While I have the utmost respect for talent who remain "homeboys", there is a reason there are "the big leagues" and "the minors".
Saying the size of the market has no bearing on the talent is like saying a Bulls pitcher would make it for the Yankees right off the bat.
The minors are a training ground for the majors. Well, at least they used to be.
The level of intensity and pressure is significantly higher in a top 10 or 20 market as compared to a top 50 or 100. Of course the rewards are correspondingly larger also.

The minors are no longer a training ground for one simple reason: voice tracking. It's easier and cheaper to bring in one of the "big boys" from a larger market via VT than it is to pay some newbie to learn how to board op for a computer overnight. With the technology has come a lot of ability to cut back in budgets, and it's resulted in the conversion of the training ground into a dung heap.

I am sorry, Raleigh Rocker, but the baseball analogy does not work for radio!

Not everyone asipres to live in New York or work on NY Radio or any of the top ten markets! Sorry, it just ain't that big-a-deal for most people in the radio biz and just because a person chooses to remain in a large or medium market is no indication that they couldn't make it in a major if they wanted to.

I would submit to you that many of the so called "big leaguers" would be also rans in a market like those in North Carolina. I am not suggesting that NC is better - just different! Just as all markets are different. That's part of the problem of radio today - too many suits think what is great is NY should also be great in Raleigh or Greensboro.

Hey, how bout just pull the damn plug on all local stations and run the same programming - all out of one place! Oh yea, they call that XM.

The market size is totally irrelevant to level of talent. Not every jock is hung up on market size....and not every jock in New York is a top notch talent. Take Bill Flynn....He's been on the air on the same station for 20+ years. Do you realize how rare that is???? And trust me, Mr. Flynn is doin ok in the $$$$$ dept. Quality of life, raising a family, and job security all have more bearing on some folks than market size.

People bash CC alllll the time on here. But take a look at CC Greensboro....How long have Flynn, Songster, and Davis been on WMAG??? How long has Angie and Aunt Eloise been on TQR??? Hell, even the Buzzard has had mostly the same staff from almost day 1. I'm sure lotsa these folks have gotten offers from bigger markets and stayed put. Meanwhile, the "live & local" company across town is goin thru airstaffs every couple years on KZL and KRR.....

While I can't tolerate Clear Channel and I would say the better talent remains more because of $$$ than anything, I do agree that the level of talent is not necessarily better in a larger market. I think quality of life, friends, family, etc., are reasons that some of these long-timers have stayed put. Also, they're getting along in age, and uprooting to move is not so appealing. Better to last it out where you are, make as much money as you can, then retire with dignity. Plus, these people are in-tune with the area and it's part of their on-air personna. You couldn't just pluck them out of this market and place them in an area they know nothing about and expect the same type of performance.

Couple of sidelines - Rod Davis left WMAG at least 3 times. He was a little rowdy in his younger years. The last time he came back, I think he was very grateful and straightened up his act. He's been a true professional ever since.

Angie Ward is married to the PD of The Buzzard, so don't think she's going to be lured to a larger market, although she has the talent for it.

You have to consider quality of life. Just because someone doesn't work in the majors, doesn't mean that they aren't qualified to. Lots of people (myself included) have worked in a major market and moved out due to family circumstances. And, on the talent note - believe me - there are plenty of people in major markets who are stifled in the creative department by management and become just another pretty voice. It happened to me, and it happens all the time. I worked at 2 stations in the same market and it was the same at both - limit the talk...not a lot of creative input.

As for the cha-cha-changes at DBC.... it happens there at the end of the year because that's when a lot of contracts are up.

BTW - with Marcia out the door at KRR, who is taking the reigns on afternoons? I haven't heard a peep from Lewis Street.
