talk about going full circle...

I was randomly scanning the glorious AM dial this morning, waiting for my crack at the WLOK bible trivia contest, and heard Jay Marvin filling in for the regular 680 morning show. For really die hard connectionists, Jay did overnights on 68 during their country thing, circa 1978. 'Course, since then he's worked at, like, WLS and stuff...

my scheduled just changed so i probably wont hear the morning show as much as i used to .. no more getting up at 5am for now

....and another "full circle" example......it's my understanding that Bill Dries is back at WREC

It's funny you should mention that, because most of my career, I've worked everywhere at least twice. I had two stints at WJDX, divided by a side trip to WKOR; I have already worked at WHBQ twice, split by a trip to 13Q in Pittsburgh. I count my second spell on 680 as the time I spent as it's control operator when I was doing Solid Gold Sunday on 'RVR. I was "the new guy" at 103 in 1979, 1986, and briefly after losing the evening shift on 95.7 when they got religion. And I guess this is my fourth distinct stint at FM100. Fate has yet to reunite me with K-97 (did all nights there while doing middays at WMPS).

Speaking of the Solid Gold Sunday simulcast...I used to put the moniotr on the AM side because the oldies sounded like I remembered them over there....in the headphones as well.

Bill Dries, now there is a name out of the past. I remember when he used to hang with us in the WREC newsroom. I think at the time he was probably working for the college station. Dan

Bill is a very talented newsperson. I remember he had a flair for both writing and gathering. And I remember his brother, Gene, who was a record rep, and one time program director of the Southwestern station. Reportedly, the format there was say "WLYX, Memphis" at the top of the hour, then do whatever you want...

Dries is back with WREC as of this week.

Speaking of WLYX..... in about 1974 or 75 a friend of mine did the play by play broadcast of Southwestern football games on that station.

By the way, I won on the Bible Quiz Friday.... I haven't won anything on the radio in over 30 years! I haven't been eligible...

Bill Dries is, indeed, an outstanding reporter. I wanted to hire him away from WREC during my stint as 790's PD but I didn't have room in the budget. That was ultimately good for him since WMC was blown up soon thereafter...a trend that continues.

I ran into Bill's former boss at the CA last week and asked if he knew where Bill was now. He didn't...now I do. As Rob said, he is a special talent.

As for Gene, I have one of the alltime great stories about him from our days at Westside. It is hard to believe and too lengthy for this forum but totally true. For those who have heard it, you know.

Rob, stop taking advantage of lightweights on the Bible quiz. As for you Danny Sears, would love to see you sometime. We can relive Osborne stories.

WREC has made some great hires of some known vets over the last six months. This new PD seems to know what he is doing.

Now Bob, when were you PD at 790?....Damn, I am losing my memory I suppose. But, having worked on Union Avenue for a number of years, I find it hard to believe that the money wasnt in the budget! (actually, I jest). And you Rob Grayson, are you not at 100 any longer? Forgive me for not having tuned in recently! I am still coming to Brunswick to see you man. Don't you know it is difficult to make it "out of town" now that I no longer have a driver!

Peace and Love to the entire bunch on here

Yep, I'm still doing "whatever" on weekends.

I'd like to hear some good Osbourne stories....I could tell a few myself. I remember when he did TV news on the station in Jackson. I think it was before they changed the name to WBBJ......it used to be WDXI.

Rick, as in RR, you've been losing your mind since working at McDonald's 35 years ago. Too many freshly made french fries, I'm guessing.

I was at 790 from early '96 til mid '98. I assumed the PD job, for lack of other options on both sides...in late '96 until I left.

Grayson, God told me you really should back off the Bible trivia scam you've gotten into. It's just not fair buddy.

Didn't remember Danny O did tv in Jackson. Not exactly a Joe Birch lookalike, but hey...

Steve Versnick at WREC has indeed made some excellent hires. I spent some time with him when he first arrived and it was quickly obvious that he is a real radio guy...not a corporate jack*&%. The alums of that station, most of them gone now, are smiling that there is someone who cares.

Would love to hear some really old airchecks of K97 like of the automation & disco days especially.
