Talk hosts who are missing in WNY

Michael Savage isn't on at all in Buffalo, and Mark Levin is absent in both Buffalo and Rochester. Then there is the absence of the progressive hosts in Rochester ever since WROC flipped to sports. While I believe Dr. Laura airs on Finger Lakes Radio, she is also missing in both Rochester and Buffalo. Also other Laura Ingraham isn't on in Buffalo. Jamestown lost Rush Limbaugh when WKSN flipped.

Please, Buffalo radio is truly better off without the hate-mongering talk of Michael Savage. Just thinking about him sends shivers down my spine. Laura Ingraham is on the air in Buffalo on WECK. And Dr. Laura? She is yesterday's news. Her time has certainly passed, so her absence from the Buffalo and Rochester markets is no big deal.

Speaking somewhat off the cuff, I think Savage crossed the line too many times; he's become more of a liability than an asset when it comes to advertisers and that's the kiss of death. These talkers run so close to that line so often that it doesn't take much to push them over it, and with ad revenues being what they are, just one mis-step can kill your career. Personally I loathe Savage so I'm not sorry to see him go, but I'm not terribly fond of this climate that encourages pushing the envelope so hard that we're in a one-and-done system.

Dr. Laura always struck me as being a one-trick-pony. She was effective...if one can call it that...when the mood called for a holier-than-thou figure on an anti-gay rant. But when the hate-talk-du'jour switched to racism and, more recently, to socialism/healthcare, she never really shifted with it. That was always Rush's greatest talent. I can't stand him or anything he stands for, but the man is quite the genius at reading/manipulating the national zeitgeist.

As for lack of progressive talkers, their absence is somewhat noticeable...but the queen of left wing, Amy Goodman, is on local cable TV about four times a day so it's kind of a different story there. Democracy Now! is really a TV show more than a radio show these days, anyways. Much to my annoyance, I might add...

Missing, but not missed.

How many different voices--all saying the same thing, does any market need?

Talkradio has become so predictable and boring.

Perhaps a principal reason why both WBEN and WHAM, as well as other heritage commercial talkers, seem to be receding from their peak ratings performance of the past--and struggling to hold on to the demos advertisers want?

You know I'm very liberal myself, but I personally despise Amy Goodman and she annoys me too. From the dull persona to her nasty attitude that she is always right and can do anything she wants, it's no wonder the only interviews she can get these days are from Z-list talking heads and obscure scholars.

I don't think Democracy Now could be more boring or self righteous. It is just bad radio. But..... don't get me started on the right wingers.

Who needs Savage and the other haters when you have home grown old white guys on WBEN who carry the water just as efficiently with a touch of localism for good measure.

Maybe it's the incredibly mean-spirited manner that talk hosts (a/k/a right wing hosts) are taking these days. Sure they hated Clinton, but the anti-Clinton stuff was childs-play compared to the snarling anti-Obamavitriol that you hear from them these days. It's no longer entertaining as much as it is irresponsible and unsettling, and I can stomach it a lot less now than I did a few years ago. In the past, I rarely turned the radio off out of disgust, while these days it's a regular occurrence.

I don't think I've shared this story here before...

(and in the grand scheme of things, when the "actual events" on which it is based took place really wasn't that long ago, sigh...)

Today I think many shows are more like this...

The net of it for me is that, without naming names, it's impossible for me to listen to a talk show where the host himself does not listen. Fortunately, there are a few exceptions, and there have been others. They know who they are.

I would have thought so too. But, she just switched affiliates in Los Angeles and I guess that was a HUGE deal.

I didn't see Glenn Beck mentioned, he's on in Syracuse and Rochester but not in Buffalo. There's a handful of other talk host that don't get much play in these parts.

WNY ain't LA. Dr. Laura's been here, and warn out her welcome.

Does anybody really think that we need even more partisan political blather on our local airwaves? Puh-lease. Of course, if the RIAA does manage to get their "performance tax" enacted, I'm sure that we'll have more talk radio in Buffalo - on FM.

As annoying as some of then may be, I believe the entire Upstate is for better or worse lucky to continue to have local hosts in this era of going syndicated 100%(hello WABC!). WBEN still has Bauerle and Beach and up until a couple months ago had the wonderful Dobson. WHAM has Lonsberry and Matthews, WSYR has Reith, WGY has Weeks and Roney, and WNBF has Tony still. Both WECK and WJTN also feature local hosts like Riter in WECK's case. All still dedicate a good amount of time and effort to news.

Still I believe Steven21 has a point. The continuing, one-note vile blather as spewed by people like Hannity, Savage, Gallagher etc. will send listeners away in droves. They are downright hateful, and as their listenership reaches a median age of 80, their future looks bleak.

Glenn Beck is on in Jamestown -- but on Sundays; 4:00-7:00 PM on WJTN and moving to 7:00-10:00 PM later this month.
