Wow, Rhandi isn't on in LA, might as well give up if a Nationally syndicated talker ain't on in LA

No, she's on KTLK in Los Angeles. The curious thing is that even though she is on that L.A. station, her web site also lists her as being on another supposed L.A. station, which is actually 250+ miles away.

However she is NOT on in New York or Chicago and despite being syndicated by Premiere is now on fewer stations than she was on when she was syndicated by the now defunct NovaM network.

She might as well retire

Well it might be based on how the radio ratings are setup in certain cities. For Columbus Ohio they include the surrounding suburban cites Grove City, Reynoldsburg, Westerville, ect.

Yeah, but in this case, I'm not talking about Grove City or Westerville. Stations in places like Marion or Newark show up as "Columbus" affiliates on these lists.

WLW is listed in the Arbitron ratings for Columbus Ohio as well. Arbitron includes stations in a particular market on where the radio stations are located not the where the transmitter is. Plus if a person can pickup a station on their receiver and they have an Arbitron diary they will include that station in that particular market. I thought you knew this since you run a radio blog.

Last night I was able to pick up WXIZ FM from Waverly Ohio an Class A FM station that broadcast under 1KW.

Ummm...of course I know ratings books show out of town stations with listenership. And certainly, WLW fits in that category.

But that doesn't make them a Columbus market station, any more than it makes the Waverly station an in-market station because you can pick it up on your radio in Columbus. :)

And the fact that you may be able to strain through static to hear stations like the Marion AM talker - or a station from Zanesville or Newark - don't make them "Columbus stations".

So, an affiliate list can put WMRN/1490 down under "Columbus", but in reality, no one in the Columbus metro area is listening. That's my point.

Speaking of KTOX in Needles, WW1 shows have used nearby Lake Havasu City station KNTR as a "Phoenix" affiliate. Perhaps part of the Phx TV market? It's closer to Vegas.

The thing I always thought syndicators did (and I'm not positive which ones or all) is claim X number of affiliates, counting from day one of syndication. So in a market where a host jumps from one third-tier talk station to the next, they could claim 2, 3, or more "affiliates" in that market, even though they don't have that many clears NOW. Dave Ramsey claims "400 stations" but I doubt he is on 400 stations today. He's been on three in Phoenix and I think they all count toward the 400. I have heard Hannity does the same; not sure if Rush has with his 660-something, although you'd have to go back quite awhile to find many Rush station swaps, save Fargo, Baltimore, and Seattle, although I suppose the CC talkers in MN, NO, Pittsburgh, and a few others count. Not that Rush needs to revise his number upward to sell anyone.
