Talk/News Coverage - Katrina

Anyone listen to the talkers or the news stations these past few days? The coverage was pretty consistent about Katrina. Most of the shows, including the weekend niche programming, used the airwaves to spread info and share stories with evacuees and volunteers.

what did you expect from them? although ksev, knth and kfnc all did thier usual paid crappy programs and the usually no clue job they do everyday. At least KTRH and KPRC had their weekend types talking about what people cared about most. all weekend long, no holiday off. the rest, par for the course, or should i say sub par.

No clue? On my way to The Wave early Saturday morning I was treated to the usual colon treatment infomercial on KPRC. At least when I tuned into KNTH, Michael Medved was on. The was recorded Friday afternoon. SRN News updated info on the top and the bottom of each hour. Yes, there are paid programs on as well. There are several local shows which are paid for by the sponsors. However, a lot of the stations do it. Thats how they make money....all of them.

KNTH was playing :60 recorded spots mentioning the places for drop off and volunteer information.

KPRC did turn most all of their weekend programming into Katrina updates. That probably was pretty tough for garden guys and such to stop talking about their usual info and tips.

I tuned in several times Sat and Sun and found Michael Garfield seemingly "anchor" their coverage. He was on at least through mid-afternoon on both days and even on Sunday morning while I was driving to church.

Sounded pretty darn professional to me and a ton of calls were coming in from victims and volunteers. Good talk radio in times of crisis.

I flipped back and forth between KTRH, KSEV, KNTH and KPRC. No doubt the CC stations rallied around the cause. I heard Garfield on KPRC and KTRH Sunday morning. He did some hustling - he interviewed Mayor White for the latest updates and tracked down info about communication lines at the Dome and GRB.

One caller had volunteered 30 straight hours and broke down on the phone with him. Pretty touching but yet good radio.

Nothing too impressive on the other AM news/talks. A little political biting and blaming. Paid programming.

Would you believe...

...that someone actually called and complained about a station raising money for the Red Cross? Said that the people really didn't need help because they'd all get money from their insurance company.
