I was sitting in Twains in Decatur the other day for lunch; they had Dave FM on.
Good God. Can someone tell the midday jock (Mara?) to put a sock in it and play some music, maybe? Talk talk talk talk talk--it was endless--and the important part of it to me was, I was in a pretty busy public place so all the talk was unintelligible. The effect was nothing short of total irritation. It was like being in a crowded bus station with a broken down, staticky P.A system.
I've been in the business for nearly 30 years now and it never ceases to amaze me how many music station "personalities" think that because they've won an AIR Award or two, they've got a license to yak up a storm about pointless nonsense.
That's the key to this: pointless nonsense. If the talk is relevant, has a beginning, middle, and end, and is contextual to the music playing, well then, ok. But mindless jabbering is a complete tune out. And last I checked, Dave's numbers weren't exactly setting the Atlanta market on fire, so it's not as if the audience is clamoring for more of this.
