I am new to Arizona in the last year and would like to hear everyones feedback / Take on the major players in the Talk Format Arena here in Phoenix

What are you opinions on:

KTAR?

KFYI?

Free FM 101.5?

Are there any new stations that are going talk?


What is missing as far as Talk Hosts here in Phoenix?

What would you like to see? and Who should be replaced?

I am a big Talk Show listener and came from South Florida (Number 12 Mareket)

Is Talk getting bigger here in Phoenix or is it dying? I hear a lot of the shows on now get little callers.

Yet when Free FM puts on test shows late at night they get heavy phone lines.

So it seems to me there is a HUGE need for Entertaining and Informative Talk down here and that the listeners are dying to get a Talk Host who can keep the listeners awake and interested.

I always believed that Talk Radio sshould NOT be dry and just news. It should ENTERTAIN an audience and give them interesting topics and guests.

ALL YOU vets of the Phoenix listening audience I would love your detailed feedback please.

KTAR? Outside of sports, they're almost irrelevent to anyone under the age of 70. Like KOY, their audience is dying of old age. They think bringing back Captain Stupor will return them to past glory? Hey, Bonneville, this is 2006, not 1976. Gerald's day is done. I do think changes will happen in the next year, once Power 92 goes away and that station becomes KTAR-FM.

KFYI? They used to be much better. Bruce Jacobs is uninformed and unlistenable; he should go back to sports where he knows what he's talking about. Mr. Kommando is still OK, but he sounds like he'd rather be elsewhere. Crummy? He doesn't even live here. What does he really know about Phoenix? Who's doing 7-10? And why is Coast to Coast run twice? Limbaugh is still the best thing on this station. Forget Hannity.

Free 101.5? Is anyone listening? A CBS-owned hot-talk station without Stern is a loser, and they know it. I expect this one to die by the end of the year.

The others? Air America 1480 is still a non-factor with a bad business plan. Intelligent liberal-talk is still on NPR (KJZZ 91.5). KKNT 960 is and probably will always be a bunch of 3rd-rate (at best) Rush-wannabes. As far as KFNX 1100 and KXAM 1310 go, SRP and/or APS may love their electric bills, but they are a total waste of spectrum.

Welcome to Phoenix! Here is some lowdown from a native...

For KFYI, "conservative" is key...

KFYI's morning guy, Bruce Jacobs, came from sports. The program director, Laurie Cantillo (formerly PD at KTAR), gave him a chance in the afternoons, first, then took a gamble with him mornings. She has asked him to tone down and very recently enlisted Karilyn Frazier, formerly of KTAR & KAJM (music radio), to be his producer and help temper him.

Following him is long-time KFYI mainstay, Barry Young, who's young wife Kim Kommando hosts nationally syndicated computer talk (KFYI Saturdays). He has added his personal friend, Michelle, as his "Robin Quivers."

Viagra-pumped Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity fill the afternoons with ideology.

Joe Crummey, long of L.A., fills the evening shift from 400 miles west of here.

The night shift was vacated months ago and rotating hosts are still filling in.

KTAR is a Phoenix legend. When Salt Lake City-based Bonneville purchased the station months ago, they implemented their national model, morning and afternoon newswheels.
The morning host, Pat McMahon, has been a popular personility in Phoenix for decades. Some feel the sextagenarian is too long in the tooth, while others respond to his nostalgic ruminations. His role was diminished dramatically a couple of years ago and very recently, he was resurrected.
Pat leans left. I would say station is balanced in terms of left and right.
The afternoon and night shifts have been open for weeks, now...
It will be interesting to see what will happen when KTAR goes to 92.3 FM...

960 KKNT (NT=News Talk), The Patriot, is owned by Salem, a Christian company. They feature nationally-syndicated shows, primarily: Dennis Prager, Michael Medved, Hugh Hewitt. Locals Tom Liddy (G. Gordon's son) and Austin Hill left KFYI to pursue national syndication, and now they are stuck in the obscurity of 960's plush studios at the Esplanade.

91.5 FM KJZZ is the local National Public Radio affiliate. Just this month, one local, weekly talk show commenced. All the other programming is national. Though they do not show up in general Arbitron ratings, KJZZ has been placing 7th in the market--above KTAR of late! Certain NPR shows lean left, but basically, this is in-depth, intellectual discussion.

1310 KXAM is a joke about town. Only locally-owned, single station left, I think. Matt Gerson's dad gave the station to him as a toy. Some earnest efforts among personnel there, including night host, Jeffry O'Brien.

KFNX 1100 now features Charles Goyette (describes self as Libertarian) and John Dayl in the mornings. Both have been playing radio-musical-chairs in the Valley. Nights is nationally-syndicated Michael Savage--savagely conservative.

As for my opinion about what's listed above...I would like SMART AND entertaining--and there is a dearth of that. I do not listen for ideological bolstering. I'd like to hear fresh, non-conventional opinions from hosts and callers and stre-e-etch my thinking.

KNFX Mornings

Help me out; I miss John Dayl in the mornings. I thought he went to Sat and Sun nites at 8 to 10 p.m.

If he is still on in the mornings on KFNX, I would like to know. I can't handle Goyette, so am not listening in the mornings anymore.

Sorry I misled you...I have not actually listened to 1100 for a long time.
Their website still promotes Dayl from 6 - 9 AM -- but this morning,
I heard Goyette at that time...
 
Air Amerika mornings on BOTH 11~hundred and 14~eighty! Must be a vast left-wing conspiracy...I'll get Nurse Jeff to check it out! :eek:
 
It doesn't help that KPHX's daytime directional pattern is directed to the southwest of 27th Avenue and Roeser. Whether or not this past ratings trend they had is a fluke will be determined.

Want good talk radio? Sorry It's not here ! Try going to KGO.Com. ABC's excellent local station out of SF. Live local 24/7 except for Bob Brinker on Sat/Sun. They are truly a great station. And, when the talk is just to much for your brain to take try KRZS 97.5. Star-FM very nice. I love a station that doesn't take it self to seriously...Very funny promos. I like Their "Lights Out AZ". 10pm. They got a new morning guy too.

Regarding your perception...It just seems that Radio in Arizona or the Owners of those Stations in AZ do not care about having a creative fun informative Local Show on the air?...This is precisely what most of us who post on this board grouse about! Conglomerates based out of town buying our local signals doesn't help...

I used to be on-air--at 5 different stations in town--so I have dabbled up and down the dial. Board name actually pronounced air "sheik" -- as in a compatriot of fellow poster, Dr. Akbar -- Per a recent posting by the good Dr., Bruce Jacobs would say that's Latin ;) for sophistication in dress and manner; elegance... My moniker serves as a double entendre (more Latin ;) ), alluding to my style... :-*
It's all in the spirit of good fun! ;D

Though I remain a radiophile, and continue to commune with colleagues in the biz, for now, I have sold out and have opted to make a lot more $ working with media on the other side.

Okay Wolfman and AirChic...the keys to the spare room at the Media Hut are under the floormat of the Gremlin :eek:. In the meantime, Nurse Jeff and I think talk radio in Phoenix also includes the three Sports Talk stations...ESPN 8~sixty, XTRA 9~ten and The Deuce 10~sixty. Sure they have tons of syndicated talkers, but they also have some entertaining locals.
 
Dr. Akbar & Nurse Jeff have a point; sports-talk should be included since KFYI's Bruce Jacobs also hosts a weekend talk shot on XTRA 9Ten. He actually is good in that format. :eek:
