Talk Radio Jan. Scoreboard in Top 10 Markets

After hitting a high in November during the Presidential Campaign, most Talk Radio stations in large markets saw declines in December and not much recovery in January. Currently only four large-market stations, KFI, WGN, WBAP and WSB, finish in the top 10. (Honorable mention for WMAL Washington which tied for #11. And in Market #11, WJR Detroit finished at #6.)

WLS Chicago, usually in the top 10 along with WGN, took a tumble. In Boston, WRKO, the city's last commercial all-Talk station, after 96.9 WTKK and 1200 WXKS left the format, still only managed a #15 finish. On the other hand, WBAP-AM-FM Dallas finished pretty well in a Sunbelt market where all top 10 spots are usually occupied by FM music stations.

I only included fulltime commercial Talk Radio stations that get at least a one share (except for legacy station KABC).

1. NYC...WABC #14 and WOR #20
2. LA...KFI #4 and KABC #35
3. Chicago...WGN #4 and WLS #15
4. San Francisco...KSFO #20 and KKSF #21
5. Dallas...WBAP-AM-FM #8
6. Houston...KTRH #13 (tie)
7. Washington...WMAL-AM-FM #11 (tie)
8. Philadelphia...WWIQ(FM) #17 and WPHT #21 (tie)
9. Atlanta...WSB/WSBB(FM) #4
10. Boston...WRKO #15

Well, I did say "commercial" talk stations.

Maybe I should do a separate scoreboard for NPR affiliates since many are in the Top 10. NPR stations are sort of a cross between Talk and News. They do some long-form news reports on Morning Edition and All Things Considered, and only do Talk shows some hours of the day. Some still play Classical music. A few, like WGBH-FM Boston, play Jazz at night.

And of course, they don't really care about ratings as much as they care about doing programming that will prompt listeners to donate. WNYC-AM-FM NYC don't do that well in the ratings. But their New York listeners donate so much money, they are considered the most successful NPR stations by far.
