Talk Radio May Scoreboard for Top 10 Markets

Warmer weather is tough on Talk Radio stations. Many youthful FM formats see a boost when school lets out and the skies are sunny. This month, only four big market Talk stations hit the top 10 in their cities. Only WGN Chicago finished in the top 5.

1. New York...WABC (Cumulus) #15 tie...WOR (Clear Channel) #23 tie...WKXW(FM) (Townsquare) #23 tie.
2. Los Angeles...KFI (Clear Channel) #6 tie...KABC (Cumulus) #36 tie.
3. Chicago...WGN (Tribune) #3...WLS (Cumulus) #19
4. San Francisco...KSFO (Cumulus) #18...KKSF (Clear Channel) #21 tie
5. Dallas...WBAP-AM-FM (Cumulus) #14
6. Houston...KRTH (Clear Channel) #10 tie
7. Washington...WMAL-AM-FM (Cumulus) #15 tie
8. Philadelphia...WPHT (CBS) #19 tie...WWIQ(FM) (Merlin) #19 tie
9. Atlanta...WSB/WSBB(FM) (Cox) #6
10. Boston...WRKO (Entecom) #16

I only include commercial Talk stations that scored at least a one rating, except for heritage Talk outlet KABC.

"Philadelphia...WPHT (CBS) #19 tie...WWIQ(FM) (Merlin) #19 tie"

Not really. WPHT had almost double the listeners. The people listening to WWIQ never changed the dial so that's why the numbers appeared to be equal. I would believe that WWIQ listeners were probably 10 - 20 years on average older that WPHT listeners.

The only reason WPHT did anywhere near as well as it did was running the Phillies.

Well, OK, but is it possible that talk stations in major markets have devolved to the point where people just don't listen as much anymore. KFI and WSB -- two stations that don't insult their listeners with endless infomercials and pay-for-play syndication -- have at least managed to retain a respectable #6 in their respective markets.
