Talk Radio network may have suspended operations

A program director I talked to today says he called one of the TRN hosts at home to ask what was up. The host claimed he hadn't been paid since May!

Some people like Rich Lieberman others don't. I guess he has had some good information and bad information over the years. He is saying TRN is finished and Masters is not credible (sue him, not me) Guess Boortz quit at the right time ans Inghram and Savage switched at the right time.

In some cases the State Labor department or Feds can get involved, even if their is no money in the bank. If think some states have a "recovery fund" Depends on the employment contract, State law, etc. I would touch base with an attorney or State Labor Department if I was out money, but I would not put too much effort or hope in the process.

Boortz was with Cox/Dial Global, not TRN.

Mr. Humphries was interviewed by Inside Radio for its follow-up story today (at http://www.insideradio.com/Article.asp?id=2697561). The most-important line in the story is: "...hosts say they are working without pay, producers or adequate explanations from management about the network's current plight."

Also, today's Tom Taylor Now (at http://somethinglikenothing.net/ttn/ttn-09102013.html) mentions that Chris Markowski (the "Watchdog on Wall Street") was filling in for Jerry Doyle. The story also says that the Oregon HQ is now comprised of just Mark Masters, Jim Watkins (for affiliate relations), "and a skeleton crew of support staff".

Updated because I forgot to check Talkers earlier: It reports today (at http://www.talkers.com/2013/09/10/tuesday-september-10-2013) that Mr. Doyle "is not doing live, new programs and is exploring options to continue his talk show outside of the TRN operational framework". There may also be some issues with "America's Morning News" (which was technically separate from ARNN).

Nobody has made syndicated or turn-key all news work. Not NBC. Not the AP. Not CNN. What did TRN expect?

All news won't work outside major markets. Short TSL means you need lots of cume.
And even in major markets nobody's launched a successful all news station in 40 years.

America's Morning News aired this morning with David Ruben, Senior Executive Producer of TRN, at the helm.

Off-topic: This reminds me when UPS drivers went on strike in 1997. The managers and supervisors had to "suit up" (put the brown uniforms on) and hit the road to make deliveries.

The original plan for CNN Radio was simply offer the audio from Headline News. That worked great 20 years ago, and was certainly cost efficient. But the market for it dried up a long time ago. Then they had to staff a full radio network. Not very cost efficient.

Sure when a major story breaks, like 9/11 or the Iraq War, people want 24/7 news on the radio. But under normal circumstances, it's just plain boring.

Anyone know if Doyle was still off his show last night?

When Doyle was sick, no one knew what was happening. The family did not communicate with the employer, etc. This leads me to believe TRN does not have good contingency plans for things going wrong with talent or technology, which is one of the thing a network should do.

NBC has TOTH news on 2 stations+ in PHX.

I have confirmed Doyle was indeed off again last night. Rumor is that Doyle has no phone screener and his producer was replaced.

Now you have TALKERS reporting the TRN COO has resigned.

The other day at 6PM I had on The Talk of Connecticut (1360 Hartford, 610 Torrington, 1240 Waterbury, 1470 Meriden and 102.9 HD3) and they ran their regular Fox News at the top of the hour. After the FOX News top of the hour cast ended some bumper music began playing and that was abruptly cut off and The Jerry Doyle Show began. The Talk of Connecticut does not normally carry The Jerry Doyle Show. The Talk of Connecticut normally airs America's Radio News 6PM-9PM. Now if you go to their website: http://www.talkofct.com/ it says Wall Street Journal Daily Wrap Up 6PM-9PM, but it still has ARN's logo. Just checked and The Jerry Doyle Show is on again.

The TRN mess doesn't help talk radio in general, listeners do not like being messed with. Personally, if I hear the talk show is a "best of" ...I flip the dial. NPR might be running BBC live, and there is an AM station running a Bloomberg feed that is often live, or else I will go with music.

Doyle had just started a website besides his own. http://epictimes.com/jerry-doyle now he doe not have a show to promote it i guess?
