Ben Hoberman, known as the architect of talk radio, died May 3 at age 92. As general manager of KABC in 1960, Hoberman switched the format from MOR to talk, making KABC the nation's first full-time talk station. (KMOX in St. Louis soon followed.) Among KABC's influential hots were Joe Pyne, Louis Lomax, Michael Jackson, Ken Minyard, Bob Arthur, Ira Fistel, Dennis Prager, David Viscott, Larry Elder and Dr. Toni Grant. KABC was also the flagship station of the Los Angeles Dodgers, 1974-97 and 2008-11. Hoberman managed KABC for 19 years before leaving in 1979 to become president of ABC Radio. He resigned in early 1986 following the merger of ABC and Capital Cities.
