Talk radio rumblings?

It would appear the JOLT is about to be further set back, as insiders say Citadel's KCUB has put ink on paper with Premiere to take Glenn Beck and Phil Hendrie as the station moves toward a more general talk format based around their morning news block. Whether Jim Rome, also a Premiere property, will remain, head to 1490, or vanish from the market is up in the air, as is the exact date that Beck and Hendrie will depart 1330 and move to 1290. One can only wonder what KJLL has in store for midmornings once Beck, who is run on delay, moves down the dial. One wonders whether, if it weren't for Mancow, whether this deal could have happened, as Hendrie lost his live clearance to Rusty Humphries in what we can only surmise is one of TRN's typical deals to get their crap shows on.

Don't know specifically, but I hear the Beck replacement on KJLL will be a selection from the "liberal talk" food group. Sure do wonder what time slot they'll give Hendrie. So much for the BOB-to-talk switch.

Hope the Cow is worth all the "free" milk.

Perhaps so, although I'm not sure the braintrust at 1330 is much aware of the vast array of new programming options, seeing their specialty is running KTKT-style talk operations.

Why not take JOlt and make it a Hot Talk station. They already have Mancow. Many other syndicated offerings to choose from.

I have thought about that before, although before these announcements, I figured KCUB could shift the all-news show elsewhere and build a "Radio for Guys" format with Jim Rome and sports until 1pm or so. Then again, Don and Mike tanked when they were on the Jolt several years back.

Not a bad idea entirely, although Leykis' 10-midnight clearance was history when Mancow/Humphries came in. In reality, though, last spring/summer when they were back to back, Hendrie pulled mid-2s 12+ and Leykis got low-2s. Not bad considering around the time the station overall had slipped to the mid to low-1s; also not bad considering the highly directional night pattern that cuts off the rapidly growing northwest.

Leykis was on the station live in PMD several years back, IIRC, when Pat Johnston took over for Pat Porter. Whether Leykis had weak numbers in that daypart or they just felt a better opportunity existed quasi-competing with KNST, I don't know. But it could be said that Tucson is too small for a full-fledged hot talker.
