Talk Radio Scoreboard for Large Markets: January 2014

The nation's #1 and #2 syndicated Talk hosts, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, switched stations in a number of markets with the new year. Rush was on new homes in New York, LA and San Francisco, and joined CBS-owned WPHT Philadelphia the previous month. Hannity left all his Cumulus affiliates, in most cases to go on Clear Channel outlets. But it really didn't change the landscape for Talk Radio that much.

No commercial Talk Radio station hit #1 in the largest markets, but WSB Atlanta was #2 and KFI, WGN, KTRH and WMAL were all in the top 10.

1. New York...WABC (Cumulus) #17 ... WOR (Clear Channel) #21
2. Los Angeles...KFI (Clear Channel) #9 tie ... KABC (Cumulus) #37
3. Chicago...WGN (Tribune) #9 ... WLS (Cumulus) #19 tie
4. San Francisco...KSFO (Cumulus) #15 tie ... KKSF (Clear Channel) #26
5. Dallas...WBAP (Cumulus) #16 tie
6. Houston...KRTH (Clear Channel) #8
7. Washington...WMAL-AM-FM (Cumulus) #7
8. Philadelphia...WPHT (CBS) #19 tie ... WKXW(FM) (Townsquare) #24
9. Atlanta...WSB/WSBB(FM) (Cox) #2
10. Boston...WRKO (Entercom) #17

I only include commercial Talk stations that scored at least a one rating, except for heritage Talk outlet KABC.

CBS needs to end talk radio on 1210, now. Their ratings should be sending a signal to them. It makes no sense for a 50,000 WATT station to be in 19th place like WPHT is right now.

When any alternative to what they have now would land them in 25th place, it makes perfect sense.
