Talk Radio Scoreboard for Major Markets: October 2014

It's the #1 most listened-to station in Philadelphia.

So WHAT? Least objectionable programming. On in the background (nobody really listens; ad dollars wasted) all day long. Quantity does not equal quality. Biggest slice in an ever-shrinking pie.

So WHAT? Least objectionable programming.

That may be, but it demonstrates that this independent owner knows his market, and knows what he's doing. That's what this thread is about. The fact that it's not your personal taste is irrelevant. They have lots of other OTA choices in the market, including some great non-commercial ones, and the majority choose this one.

Right! One station playing synthedroid elevator music. With stations like that, no wonder people think Pandora is radio.

WDVR / WBEB has not played "elevator music" for decades. It's a fairly mainstream AC station. And it is one of the most listener driven stations in the world... while other companies and stations have cut back on research, Jerry Lee constantly sounds out his listener base to find out what they want to hear.

The reason people in WBEB's target don't use Pandora instead is that the curated WBEB playlist is so much better in fit and flow and overall feel that computer driven "shuffle" formats do not stand up.

If you like adult contemporary music, WBEB is not a background station. For many people, it is their first choice and plays their favorite songs.

WBEB does extensive testing of commercial effectiveness, and even provides advertisers with the results of their studies. The station is an effective seller and that is why it has been in the "Top 2" in billing in the market for decades.

Jerry Lee has been quite vocal in the past about money wasted on ineffective ad campaigns even when they are placed on effective radio stations.

Well, yeah, but...does he actually LIKE anything??

Funny you should ask. Do you? All I see are cheap shots at discussions in which you are otherwise not involved in an obnoxious and failed attempt at humor.

Not to Fred. The ONLY thing that matters to him is what HE likes. Everything else is "hate speech" or "elevator music" and must be destroyed.

You and your tea buddies know all about hate. It's the only emotion of which you are capable. If you weren't so busy looking for people, places or things to hate, you might have gotten the point of my earlier post.

To facilitate easier discussion, here's the data from the current month, copied from another thread, to make comparisons of gains and losses easier to see:

Talk Radio Scoreboard for Major Markets: October 2014
Midterm elections gave a boost to several Talk Radio stations, especially WMAL Washington, where the midterms could affect the jobs of numerous listeners. WMAL finished at #6, one of its best ratings in years. WSB Atlanta was not only #1 overall but #2 in the 25-54 demo, something few Talk Radio stations achieve. KFI Los Angeles, WGN Chicago and KTRH Houston also finished in the Top 5.

The news wasn't as good in Market #1, with WOR, iHeart's 50,000 watt powerhouse tied with a Talk station based in Trenton NJ, WKXW, with its tower outside the New York market. And in Boston, WRKO dropped a bit after losing its long-time afternoon host, Howie Carr, who just started at a competing station.

In the next few markets just under the top 10, WAQI (Spanish-language Talk) was #11 in Miami, WJR was #5 in Detroit, KIRO-FM was #2 in Seattle and in Phoenix KFYI was #2 and KTAR-FM was #11.

1. New York ... WABC (Cumulus) #20 ... WOR (iHeart) #23 tie ... WKXW(FM) (Townsquare) #23 tie
2. Los Angeles ... KFI (iHeart) #8 ... KABC (Cumulus) #33* ... KEIB (iHeart) #33*
3. Chicago ... WGN (Tribune) #7 ... WLS (Cumulus) #24
4. San Francisco ... KSFO (Cumulus) #14 tie ... KKSF (iHeart) #27
5. Dallas ... WBAP (Cumulus) #18 tie
6. Houston ... KTRH (iHeart) #5
7. Washington ... WMAL-AM-FM (Cumulus) #6
8. Philadelphia ... WPHT (CBS) #18 tie
9. Atlanta ... WSB/WSBB(FM) (Cox) #1 ... WYAY(FM) (Cumulus) #19
10. Boston ... WRKO (Entercom) #13

* I only include commercial Talk stations that scored at least a one rating, except for heritage Talk outlet KABC Los Angeles and Rush's LA outlet, KEIB.

Any idea why OP (Gregg) decided to re-post his original post with no new information, just an identical and duplicate post, as a new thread?

I guess for the same reason that he did the same thing for the other thread. I looked up his posting history. He keeps launching the same damn threads in this forum every month, but never seems to read or reply to anything in them.
