Talk Radio Station Owner Goes off the Reservation?

Thanks for posting the link. Interesting read.

This is a valid discussion that needs to take place.... in a sense we discuss something close to those thoughts on these board, and sometimes without much gracefulness. This is a valid discussion that needs to take place among the real live broadcasters who actually own and operated radio stations.

Here in the discussion groups, we have the freedom and leeway of being "grandstand coaches". For us to be wrong is no big deal. For us there is no penalty, no price to pay. For the station owners and operators, walking away from the discussion with the wrong answer can be dangerous to their pocketbooks in the long run.

The companion discussion is one that needs to be going on among the political organizations... and I assume it does go on with some regularity. We know what the answer is, so far. For broadcasters to avoid the discussion or to come away with the wrong answer could damage their pocketbooks. For the leaders of the two political parties to come away from discussion about what is healthy campaign language and what is too obnoxious for public consumption is much more serious. They don't just damage the worth and value of a few radio stations.... they can wreck this 200 (plus) year experiment in self government if they get the answer wrong.

This owner complains about wingnut talk show hosts putting at risk their stations’ credibility and market share. He closes by saying: “If a host cannot entertain and inspire, they should find another career. Right now, Talk Radio has too many hosts that need to find other careers.”

Though he doesn’t explicitly say that he’s referring to shows carried on his stations, he may well have at least a couple in mind, since a look at the stations' schedules indicates that they include a pair of the most incendiary talkers.

Very well. The owner is perfectly free to take the first step in nudging the offenders towards other careers by booting them off his stations. He is also at liberty to provide the balance that he says is lacking by filling the vacated slots with hosts who propound a different point of view. There are several left-of-center talkers who would meet his requirement of informing, inspiring and entertaining.
