Can't we just listen to a talk Show with interesting topics in the afternoon? The daily topic is this goofy message board on 96.5. What about the Bengals training camp? Come on. I would guess we know why the listening is so low. I really wanted this to work. I dont have any hope anymore.

now I'm not a loyal listener of 96.5 but I did listen today and you're not really giving them enough credit, the 5 and 6 oclock hour was all bengals and reds and the kid gave an outstanding interview with crhis sexton and except for that little part at the top of the show i didn't hear much about this site or mo or gregg doyel

its what i heard. and its the way it is. lets call it what it is. Bad radio.

Not really. When you are the little guy as 96.5 is you should go on the attack. When Furman says stuff towards the Clear Channel employees its good radio, especially when its shots towards Mo & Doyle, which in Doyle's case are more a statement of fact than a shot. Idea of course is to get the guys at WLW to respond thus creating more controversy and of course more free promotion. Basically what Kiss did to Q in the early days of the station, though with much better production and imaging.

Attacking their competitors is what 700 WLW Pre Jacor days, did in the mid 80's when 55KRC was the dominate AM station. It worked well for them as they went on destroying 55KRC and later WCKY 1530.

No. It is NOT good radio. It's great to the radio geeks and the folks who like the on-air hijinx of radio past. It's a laugh for the CC people. The CC people are - rightly so - told to never mention Furman or 96.5. Why should they? It's a total turnoff to anybody who tuned into 96.5 hoping to hear sports talk. It only creates controversy if WLW or WCKY answer, and if they're smart, they won't. Why? Because NOBODY cares! 90% of the listeners to Furman don't even know or care about Mo. They want to hear what Andy thinks about sports. They know he gets great guests. These last couple of days railing on his own station and WLW have been terribly boring. Meanwhile, I'm getting my sports talk fix from Lance.

I disagree that listeners don't like that type of hijinx as you stated. Why did Kiss beat Q? FLZ beat Q105 in Tampa in the early 90s? As microbob stated WLW beat KRC? Howard Stern often attacked his morning competition on air and of course sometimes off. It is good radio and people do like that type of "competition", especially if its done well.

It's been my experience that the majority of listeners are annoyed and turned off by competitors blasting each other. Most of them think it's radio BS. Normal people are media savvy, have been for years and years now, and have a low tolerance for hype and nonsense. I was able to build more than one franchise by promising listeners that, among other attributes, my station would not do such things.

As for FLZ vs. Q105, if Q105 had simply not taken the bait and reacted, Power Pig would not have had the impact it did...it would have only scored as a teen station and Q105 would have killed them in older demos. Marc Chase knows this as well as anyone. So do the guys at CC Cincinnati. That's why you won't hear a reaction to Furman from WLW or WCKY.

I still doubt listeners are annoyed or turned off by the competitors blasting each other, they may say that but the results in marketing show otherwise, whether its politics, the cola wars, or whatever. I believe if surveyed listeners say they are turned off by mudslinging of any kind, however the stats show otherwise both in politics, food/cola wars, and radio wars.

That said I agree with you that WLW shouldn't react and SuperTalk won't beat them as long as WLW continues delivering quality programming. However, if more and more budget cuts continue at WLW the programming quality will go down and with the right programming and marketing at SuperTalk they could make a dent in the ratings, especially if 96.5 could gain Reds, Bengals, or to a lesser degree Bearcats programming. Though they really need to fix their production quality on the station as it sounds like a second rate college station.

WCKY has their own problems they should fix. Lance is OK, outside of that its a horrific lineup. I don't remember the guy's name but he filled in for Tim Lewis a couple weeks ago, he was by far the best sports talk host on Homer in a long time. Too bad it was a one time deal.
