Talk Radio

Attention: the 10 people who opine on this board:

Such programming is already on the air in Phoenix, at KJZZ.

NPR stations in many markets are in the top 10, beating the commercial crapfest that has become AM radio.

Their talk programming is exactly what is being discussed here.

It's amazing that the same 10 people continue to say the same 10 things here.

And "Toaster Talk" done right is quite entertaining and very profitable. Last I checked WGN radio still owned Chicago.

So then which is more pathetic? The same 10 people saying the same 10 things, or someone that continues to point out the same 10 people saying the same 10 things as if their opinion is superior?

Toaster-talk is a failure. WGN represents the exception to the rule--and having the Cubs games doesn't hurt.

Whether you like it or not, election talk, illegal immigration and other political and major sociological issues are far more influencial on "everyday life" than topics like "So what was your first car and how fast did it go?" Discussing trivial nonsense, hot-talk and "toaster talk" are proven failures in Phoenix and most big markets.

I tried listening to Tim and Willy on KTAR and I was so bored within five minutes that I had to bail... there's only so much of the "aww shuckins we're just so glad to be here and we don't know where we're gonna end up y'all and yeehawww" type of talk that I can stand.

This is true.

For this year, but maybe not for much longer. WGN will have to bid on the rights just like CBS (WSCR/WBBM) had to for the White Sox, Bears, and Black Hawks once the Tribsters sell the team.

Except with a ridiculous level of repetition (just try to get through a morning commute without hearing the same features three or four times each) and some truly awful host voices (yeah, it's a darned shame about Diane Rehm, but still...). And with an extra-special level of smugness in their politics (which politics are never, ever put away, no matter what the topic at hand).

So, um, no, not "lifestyle talk" in any meaningful way -- not unless your lifestyle takes you solely from one end to the Upper West Side to the other. More like a slightly more professionally-run Air America. With about the same number of advertisers. ("Underwriters", whatever.)

The NPR news shows do get monotonous and repetitive.

The talk shows can be decent, depending upon who the guests and/or topics are. Though many times, the "guest" slots are just PR flacks or government spokespersons…

* Fresh Air is a really good show unless you have very little interest in the guest…
* Talk of the Nation is hit or miss except for Science Friday which I really enjoy…
* Diane Rehm (and the Here and Now?) show are also hit and miss, more miss… …Rehm's show can be interesting but her voice is akin to listening to fingernails on a chalkboard…

NPR shows are deadly dull. Usually at some point they will do a 20 minute story on some Bolivian village where you will hear children playing in the street, the old man who used do something, and a guy playing guitar.

All the while, some monotone voice does a story aimed at making you feel guilty for not living in a poor backwater nation.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

A couple other NPR shows that I really love that arn't M-F daytime (not sure when they air, they're in my iTunes podcast list)

* Radio Lab - very eclectic show on the mind and science, sort of directed at a younger audience, but entertaining none the less…
* This American Life

Wow...that means Nurse Jeff and I have a 20 share! We'll quit now as the days of double digit shares peetered out in the 80s. Interesting to hear our ol' Port Hueneme bud digs Toaster Talk WGN...just wait til Randy Michaels turns that dinosaur upside down!

Is it snowing where you are? :D Guess the next transit strike. ;D What do you think will be the lowest wind chill factor this winter? ::) Will the Cubbies make the playoffs this year? 8) Which city is the mistake by the lake?
