TALK SHOW LISTENERS AND REGIONAL VARIATIONS

Does anyone notice that some talk show hosts are more popular in certain areas of the country than others? For example, according to the latest Talkers survey, Rush Limbaugh (13.5 million listeners) is #1, Sean Hannity is #2 at 12.5 million listeners, and the #3 spot is tied at 8 million listeners between Mike Savage and Dr. Laura (who increased her lister totals). But if we compare Dr. Laura to Dr. Joy Browne (tied at #10 with around 1.5 million listeners), I notice that Dr. Joy has more affiliate stations in the East coast than Dr. Laura, but the opposite occurs in most of the rest of the country. Are there any other regional disparities anyione notices?

Neil Boortz is wayyyyy more popular in the Deep South than like anywhere else.

Same for Dave Ramsey, to a large part.

The second and third tier Limbaugh wannabees tend to do much better in the smaller south and southcentral markets.

Who woulda thunk it?

Liberal talkers and talk stations do better in areas with higher scores on Richard Florida's Creative Class Scores.

Some of the best examples of KPTK-A Seattle, KPOJ-A Portland, KGO-A San Francisco, KRXA-A monterey, KKZN-A Thornton/Denver, WINZ-A Miami, etc.

On the other hand as Michael Harrison has pointed out, Conservatives often feel that they are the underdogs in these cities, so stations like KTTH-A Seattle, KVI-A Seattle, KXL-A Portland (Lars Larson), and KSFO-A San Francisco do well.

I agree there. Neal Boortz has scattered stations throughout the rest of the country, but many of them do not carry him live and he is no where near as popular.

I've always thought of Dr. Dean Edell as mostly a western half of the country guy. Lars Larson is a hard find east of the Mississippi.

Sean Hannity doesn't really have a solid line of affiliates in New England (in both the Boston and Worcester, MA markets, he appears on stations that don't show up in the arbs, he airs at 10PM at night in Hartford, and does not air at all in Springfield, MA. He only recently added live affiliates in Manchester, and Providence. Also, he does not air on Cape Cod.

Dr. Laura has become a west coast thing; for being the third most-listened to talk host in the country, her east coast affiliate lineup would never show it.

Glenn Beck airs more often in certian states and regions than others. He has a great deal of affiliates in Texas, Florida, and Ohio, but everywhere else he mostly airs on Clear Channel O&Os.

Not really. Many of the CC O&Os don't air him (anymore). The TX/FL/OH thing is true because there are a lot of cities in those states.
LA - KLAA - not CC
Chi - WCKG (for now)- not CC
SF - KTRB - not CC
Dallas - KLIF - not CC
Houston - KSEV - not CC (was on CC's KPRC)
Philly - WPHT - not CC
Atlanta - WGST - CC
DC - WTNT - CC
Miami - WIOD - CC, but just delayed to nights
Seattle - KTTH - not CC
Phoenix - KTAR - not CC

The list goes on...
