Talk shows and baseball

We have already hit that time of year when spring training baseball begins.

Often, the flagship stations for teams are also the station for the major talkers like Rush and Hannity. Thus yesterday, WPHT in Philadelphia had to re-empt both for the Phillies pre-season opener. That's no problem if you are a talk fan and baseball fan. But its rough for a station to have to pre-empt the shows for what is basically a meaningless game.

How many other stations are now in this same boat for the season?

Ironically, there are a number of us who hope baseball returns to WVKO via the Columbus Clippers. The question would be whether Ed Schultz would be interrupted by any of the day games. But if Air America hosts continue to give Big Eddie a hard time, there are bound to be others like me who have no problem if the likes of Randi Rhodes are pre-empted.

And since the Clippers are a farm team for the Washington Senators, this may result in Bill Press paying a visit or two.

But the Clippers will definitely incur listener wrath if any game starts before noon. Stephanie Miller's time slot is sacred around here. ;D

Wilmington Delware's WDEL also is a Phillies affiliate and their live and local talk in the afternoon was pre-empted as well for that game, which I did listen to most of the game while at work. This also is a problem for WDEL when their afternoon drive time newscast is pre-empted for the Phillies as it makes getting the traffic a bit dicey as you have to wait for the spot break in the game to get that traffic report. So by time you get it, you're already stuck in traffic. I guess this is a problem for most pro-baseball (major and minor leagues) radio stations as it pre-empts their normal programming, and causes their commuter audience to go to their competitor for traffic/weather info during the PM drive. In Wilmington, though the other News/Talker (WILM) is airing Hannity so you have the same issue with getting the traffic/weather in any consistant manner as Hannity quite often runs long making the spot breaks late. I guess Wilmington might be the odd market where the station that airs Rush/Hannity does not air pro-sports meaning their shows don't get pre-empted for sports. My guess is, the money the stations make airing pro-sports must make it worth it to them to pre-empt their regularly schedule programming and the risk of having their listeners scan the dial for traffic or music or talk elsewhere, or they'd not do it.

sean-glad to hear columbus still has the clippers. sorry to hear they are no longer affiliated with the yankees, not the washington NATIONALS. the senators left town with calvin griffith to become--choose one or both--the minnesota twins or the texas rangers. oops, the senators2 became the rangers with bob short as their owner. the griffith family took the senators1 to minneapolis. now if you want to listen to real baseball announcer check out tom hamilton with the indians or vin scully with the la dodgers.--david9396 formerly david5258

Who announces is of no concern to me. The fact that this is a Columbus team does.

Keep in mind that WYTS (formerly Progressive Talk AM 1230 WTPG) has carried the Reds in its numerous formats.

seanboy--just like who the announcer is, makes the viewpoint viable--
conservative orientation, think rush, sean, savage or beck
liberal orientation, think-thom, big eddie, steph, emporer joe finan, merle polis
when it comes to sports and especially baseball, who the announcer is detemines the quality of word pictures that are painted in the mind of the listener.
its great that columbus still has the clippers, a farm team for the washington nationals. and if vko does pick up their games, then one of your favorite liberal announcers will end up preempted or delayed to accomodate the broadcast of america's favorite pasttime--baseball.

Arte Moreno, who purchased AM 830 specifically to air Angels games.... is tape delaying his own product during the week. Fans are upset. No one in the media has exposed the fact that he owns the station. Especially interesting since all Angels previous contracts specified that preseason games had to air live. Hilarious.

In Boston WRKO 680 is the Red Sox flagship but weekday afternoon and Wed. night games air on
sister station WEEI 850. There were complaints last year during spring training and the early part of
the season when parts of Rush's and Howie Carr's shows were pre-empted by the Sox...In most cases
games start at 7 pm so on the nights when WRKO does have the Sox, Howie's last half hour is
pre-empted (on his flagship station!).

Generally, WRKO would have Savage on at 7 pm but he's delayed till after the game when there is one.
