TALK versus MUSIC-- Both Have Their Junkies

If that is indeed true, the battle will be who will go where.
As both CBS and NBC develop sports and news formats for radio, the "TALK" camp will see shifting to a new voice in the market.
TALK is still TALK--SPORTS--NEWS--ETC.
CBS and others seem to think SPORTS will gain the most.
MUSIC
The WAVE started a movement to this style that quickly became "smooth jazz" in the markets that jumped on this bandwagon.
The question is, when SMOOTH JAZZ became the darling of radio, ten years ago, did audience
numbers go up? And TSL increase?
Or, did it rob audience from other music formats? I don't know.
where did that audience come from?
JACK FM,
The same can be said of this format, did it increase audience for radio? Or, rob it from the existing market?
As both of these formats peak, and decline, what will become of the audience of these two groups?

New music will always be new music, and will be a battle in all markets, NEW Is NEW.
New music, today,
is quite fractionalized, and has many genres.
that is battle--one
smooth jazz, Jack fm, Classic hits--is battle two
Talk + Sports seems to be battle three
EVERYTHING ELSE seems to be battle four.

Will MORE LISTENERS be drawn to radio, as audience starts shifting?
or, will they simply rob from one another?

Meanwhile, the INTERNET, slowly robs from all these content providers.

I still believe FOCUSING of specific genres will do best.

Playing each others music, can't be the answer
Reporting each others sports scores, can't be it either.

The Wave was created by Frank Cody, Owen Leach and the Metromedia crew over 25 years ago. It's decline and demise have been in the last 5 to 10 years due to, first, the aging of the audience core and, then, to the arrival of PPM which delivered the coup de grace.

Individual formats do not as a rule increase total radio cume or TSL. They just shuffle around the existing listeners... about 95% of all Americans.

Jack took audience from a variety of stations, and shares audience now with a variety of stations as is the norm in radio... since the average PPM panelist is seen to use about 6 different stations every week.

It's been a long time since a format was so overwhelmingly successful that it changed overall listening levels at a market level... such as the gradual creation of Top 40 stations across the individual markets in the mid to late 50's did by serving the rather ignored youth audience.

Re: TALk Versus MUSIC

I know you're talking ratings, programming strategy, etc.

Those who speculate on the future of radio are naive. People will still listen to "good" stations, regardless of format.

Speaking for myself, I listen to both talk and music. When there's a commercial, I flip from talk to music, and vice versa. I was sad to hear Mark is leaving M&B. Especially since I've been listening since high school (except for the disneyfied years). Remember the lucky butt?
