Talk

I am an outsider (Not in the business) but I have a difficult time understanding why progressive talk radio doesn't work in this market. I'm not talking extremes of Rush and Air Bankrupt but mainstream talk can pay the bills and isn't sports *yawn*. The Buzz being a prime example. If Tom Leykis is as strong in the ratings as he states why isn't anyone else carrying him live in this market? Isn't there a pub owner out there that is willing to pay to have live remotes anymore?

Even though I have heard and read a lot about Robin and Maynard, as a listener, it was amusing at times and I actually grew up listening to both of them. Honestly, my only loyalty lies in when they are making me chuckle and are actually on the air...... I happen to believe that their best work together was while on the Buzz. That being said, do they have a place in Seattle?

I could ask the same question of BJ Shea. Never followed the mentality myself. I've never been a follower of the East Coast neurotic, ranting talk show hosts that keep the show "moving" by talking over everyone and cutting them off.. Regardless of personal preferences or "hooks".. I think that this mentality also applies to Bob Rivers.. Regardless of said sidekicks, busty news girl or ratings.

I think that the only shining light in what came of the Buzz is "The Men's Room" Now on another Entercom station, KISW. I haven't in my area heard a group of people hold, command and steer an audience live they have proven to do, not only in an all talk format, but having to do the same while playing the same two songs from Pearl Jam and the Scorpions. An interesting group of guys with the ability to again.. make me laugh...And that's why I still try to catch them at work.. They're good. Really good in my opinion.

I guess I don't understand the industry as much as I need to... I lament over the death of decent talk in Seattle. But I can always hope that someone will pick up the pieces and take back what HAS to be a huge audience. And in my opinion, it doesn't have to be "Radio for guys..".. I wish I had a few million.. I would gladly try to fill the void.

Am I insane here?

Reid, keep this in mind:

Many, many business and job placement transactions are made 'inside the RADIO FRATERNITY, as it were...

...now 'OUTSIDE' of this particular group, nobody really gives a goat's patootie....

Hey, Reid ... definitely agree with you. With three self-proclaimed "conservative" talkers in the market, it's fragmenting an audience that's also shrinking a bit on its own. As you mentioned, it's unclear why ProgTalk hasn't picked up the same momentum it has seen in Portland (granted PDX is quite a bit more left-leaning, but still the markets not THAT dissimilar).

I suspect at least one of those players will begin to "moderate" ... partly to try to separate from the extremes, and partly because (wishful thinking) I kind of read the nation is moderating a bit to the middle from both poles of the spectrum. Eventually the talk stations will have to reflect that.

Keep in mind also that broadcasters, while CLAIMING they invent trends, rarely do. They kind of wait for the masses to migrate and THEN jump into that corral claiming it was "researched and predicted"!!!!
