Talkers Magazine: Progressive Talk Far From Dead

In spite of Clear Channel and others switching progressive talk stations to other formats, Talkers Magazine's latest report on the Top Talk Radio Audiences shows the top talkers in the genre continue to gain an audience.

Leading the pack: Jones Radio Networks' Ed Schultz with 3.25 million listeners. Big Eddie is in a five-way tie with, among other, Bill O'Reilly.

Adding to their audience base: Jones' Stephanie Miller and Air America's Randi Rhodes, Lionel (formerly WOR) and newcomer Thom Hartmann, each garnering 1.5 million listeners along with Alan Colmes.

Rush and Hannity may still lead the pack, but you get some rather surprising numbers if you divide the number of listeners by the number of affiliates.

I'll let you do the math.

P.S. Dennis Miller did not reach a million listeners yet.

I notice how Dr. Laura has shot up to third place, on par with Savage.

Interesting how some wise men around here not too long ago were gleefully cheering the great host's demise.

Good call on that one. ;D

Sean, your points are taken. The leftist hosts have gained, particularly Big Ed.

As much as I agree with the concept that progressive talk is not dead, I am not really all that impressed with Talkers Magazine, whose bizarre annual ratings list doesn't make any sense at all most of the time. I wonder if any of these shows in question bought ad space in the magazine. That always helps.

Additionally, as much as I like Lionel, I am not sure I trust their view that he has achieved some major status on par with Miller, Schultz, and Rhodes. His show has a tough time just getting cleared because it runs up against Miller, and she has the stronger product. Alan Colmes always needs an asterisk after his name when it comes to progressive talk.

According to Talkers Magazine Ed Schultz has twice as many listeners as Randi Rhodes, Stephanie Miller, or Thom Hartmann If you believe Talkers about that one I have a bankrupt Liberal Talk network to sell you. Fact is, that Schultz reaches just about the same number of listeners as the other top lib talk hosts. The only way he would have twice as many listeners is if he had ratings that were double those of the other hosts. In fact, his ratings are less than Randi Rhodes'. That's why she's number one http://talkingradio.blogspot.com/2007/08/top-lib-talk-hosts-in-photo-finish-for.html#links
