talking about Arbitron on-air

Wednesday evening WIBC's gm was on the air talking about radio advertising and the ppm rating system. He was of course very knowledgeable and did a good job selling radio as an advertising medium. Didn't Arbitron used to penalize stations for discussing their rating methodology on the air though? If so has Arbitron now relaxed their restrictions on that?

We probably won't get any Emmis comments as Emmis has instructed employees posting on the board that they will be terminated. Truth.

I posted last week and my parking card still seems to be working.

IIRC, back in the diary days they would penalize stations for discussing the ratings during rating periods, especially for that "write it down" stuff Apollo7979 alludes to. Now, if they're taking ratings nonstop, I'd think it would be tough to "enforce" any such rule, written or unwritten. And it impinges on First Amendment rights, too, IMHO.

Don't think it's going to affect ratings unless people are encouraged to place their PPM device in front of a radio and leave it there while they go elsewhere.

Can't see it being a 1st ammendment issue though inasmuch as Arbitron is a private company and as such is free to make whatever rules they choose.

Well, your opinion is wrong and so is your understanding of the First Amendment.

THe First Amendment only protects you from the GOVERNMENT curtailing your speech -- and even that protection has some limits, according to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Private companies like Arbitron can place all sorts of restrictions on business partners, such as radio stations, without violating anyone's civil rights.

Even Emmis is legally allowed to forbid employees from posting on sites such as this and to terminate those who do -- whether such an edict has actually been issued is another question altogether.

I'll never get why the yahoos who scream "Free Speech" the loudest are usually the ones who least understand how the concept actually works.

To what end? ???
Why would the Emmis Market Manager do a tutorial on Arbitron PPM research on air?
Forget for a moment whether he violated any Arbitron policy.
I didn't hear this in context, but is revenue on the Circle so bad that he would be "pitching" for business on air? How many new advertisers would he hope to reach listening, while at the same time alienating the majority of the general audience and causing this kind of tune out?
I know this guy likes to hear himself talk - he would hold luncheons for advertising agencies every quarter and give 40 minute speeches covering the latest ratings. Did he send invitations out to the ad buying community to "listen in" to IBC at this time for his breakouts, instead of hosting lunch??

::)

True, having heard it it did sound rather "inside baseball", but it did air on a show devoted to money & business. Not sure it convinced any listeners to spend money on radio though.
