Talking about hiper-compressed stuff

Green day put out an album several years ago, entitled “Warning”, that is one of the best examples of obliterated dynamic range I have ever seen, or heard! That sucker was hyper-compressed beyond recognition.

Has anyone found a good Direct-X third party plug in for something like Sound Forge to eliminate this effect? The best I've found is the Dynamic tool.

You can't eliminate it... You can disrupt the peak level so that it doesn't look "packed" any more, but the distortion and loss of transients will still be there. Additional compression will only look like it brought the transients back, while in fact these are just new overshoots resulting from using compression with finite attack time. Basically, all you can do with hyper-compressed material is make it worse...

If we're talking about broadcast processing, the best you can do is employ techniques that reduce further processing, such as AGCs with window gating. Almost all of BW Broadcast processors use window-gated AGCs.

I'm talking about ripping a CD which is over compressed. Seems to me that while not 100% pristine, a Direct-X with a DBX Expansion type of setting could reduce some of the heavy compression.

Like I said, it's not perfect. But it beats having it sound like butt.

like going from a hefty bag to a trash compactor. It's still trash.i would say that's a fair analogy.

Adobe Audition 1.5 has a Compander effect I've played around with on a few HC recordings. It doesn't eliminate the distortion, but was kind of good at masking it somewhat, and at least giving a smashed recording a trace of dynamic range.

ever dealt with Hip-Hop...enough said

a lot of the guys putting out some of these big hits..especially as of lately are doing them in home studios with VERY POOR setups....since most hip-hop is still released on vinyl to some point...the vinyl recordings sound so much better on the ear than the direct mp3 counterparts

Declip, at least the free version, is a cmd program. It needs a Windows front end, like the flac encoder / decoder has.

I'll try that to see how it works.

What I need it for is the 60s and 70s stuff that often gets reissued on CD that is not found elsewhere. I found a CD at Wally World (Walmart) that had a stereo version of "In My Room" by the Beach Boys.

Imagine my surprise when I played it and it was flat-topped, and there was an obvious bump up of 100 hz and below. ((deep sigh))

Get in touch with JonesTM. They have an extensive library of music and probably have what you need. www.jonestm.com

Just for a few cuts?

Sure, why not? They sell them for $0.99 a song. You can even download them from their site.

I've downloaded from JonesTM bunches of times, there's also a website called www.msaoldies.com

They have all of the lp and single versions you can imagine...plus british vs. american Beatles versions....very extensive, especially oldies. They have download capability, as well...although their prices are more than JonesTM. I like 'em both.

Don't attempt to download several linear wav files unless you're on major pipe to the net. Helps to have a download manager.

I never did understand why Dave left TM.... Did it have anything to do with the fact that TM, at the time, had a different automation system under its belt?
