Talk Host's 'Shooting Immigrants' Comments Draw Protest
Members of Arizona Interfaith Network gathered for a rally on the state Capitol lawn Monday to protest remarks made by KFYI-AM/Phoenix fill-in talk host Brian James. The group was upset over a March 8 broadcast where he discussed shooting immigrants as they crossed the border.
"What we'll do is randomly pick one night -- every week -- where we will kill whoever crosses the border," James said. "Step over there and you die. You get to decide whether it's your lucky night or not. I think that would be more fun." The group's president, Dick White, played a recording of the remarks during the protest.
"As a talk show host, sometime things I say get taken out of context or are exaggerated," James told The Arizona Republic. "I do not in any way advocate shooting illegal immigrants... I am not at this point, nor was I then, advocating shooting anyone. I was simply trying to make a point." PD Laurie Cantillo also told the newspaper that James was careful to say that he and the station do not advocate violence. (04-04-06)
