Talking over music intro

Why do jocks still do this? As a listener, nothing infuriates me more than having some idiot blabber on about something completely unrelated to the song that is starting in the background. I was listening to 94.3 last night while on a bike ride, and when they played Pearl Jam's 'Alive', the dork went on and on right until the vocals started. Maybe I'm the oddball that listens to the radio for the MUSIC, I don't know. I do know that I was ticked off enough that I switched over to MP3 mode on my player to listen to the whole CD, never switching back to the radio.

You are an odd-ball. Talking over the intro is an exellent way for a radio station to let you know what we've got going on, coming up, etc without stopping the music which you would fuss about too. Sure there are efficient ways to do it and talking up a 45 second intro is excessive, but cut us some slack dude.

Perhaps the air talent wasn't saying anything tenvol cared about so it was an irritant to them. Tenvol did indicate that what the jock was talking about was unrelated to the song. Perhaps tenvol feels that the ONLY thing the air talent should talk about over a song intro is info about the song or the artist. And clearly talking up to the post bothered him. Which reminds me what a PD told me when I first got into the business "the only people that enjoy hearing a jock hit the post is another jock, listeners hate it because they don't think we'll stop talking". Problem is, most of what we have to say takes at least 20 seconds. Don't know how long the intro is on the Pearl Jam song in question.Just my .02 cents.

Sorry to vent, but it has always been an annoyance to me. If it had something to do with the song or the group, such as tour plans, new release, etc, I could handle it better. It could be that particular station that grates on me since I'm much older than what their typical audience tends to be.

I personally miss the jocks talking over songs with everything timed out, fast paced and moving. I actually long for the old days of WNOX, WRJZ and WLS in Chicago. O those were the days 8)

I don't mind talking over intro's...You just better have something to say when Ya do it.Don't give me chatter, give me info (music, wx, temp, where to find Yoo-Hoo cheap etc)

A Lite Talk with Less Rock station once aired a liner that said something to the effect of "We know how much you hate it when your favorite songs are interrupted. That's why we keep the interruptions to a minimum." It made me chuckle when I realized they stopped the music to tell me how they don't stop the music. My vote is for talking over intros as long as what said is relevant and/or entertaining. It goes without saying it must happen in the fewest words possible. That's why I hate music beds, but that's a whole other topic.

I grew up listening to some great jocks who talked up to the post (Smokey Rivers, Spyder Harrison with 15LAC), and besides, most people want to listen to the words. I still talk up to the post, though not as much as I used to (thanks to Bobby Rader). He taught me to do radio right. Let 'em talk...only give 'em something intelligent to say. Last night's binge at the Nashville Sound is nothing good to talk up the post to.
