Talkradio actually B-A-D for discourse

It's funny to me that so many think talkradio is just this wonderful outlet for discourse, as if hosts are serving some spectacular need.

In reality, talkradio serves nothing but the egos of agenda-driven hosts.

Fact is, if you aren't a knee-jerk reactionary who's constantly spouting the party line, you are perhaps instead someone just trying to have substantive discussion in a fair and resonable manner. This is nearly impossible though, as you will find yourself spending an inordinate amount of time untangling and disspelling the most ridiculous right-wing propaganda, much of it not even remotely based in fact.

Yes, I know "the MSM has their propaganda too". To whatever degree that's true, I am referring to the realm of talkradio. And in that world, as I've said, it is very difficult to have a rational conversation while constantly trying to fend off absurdity floated by those who *must* know better, but instead choose to misinform to please a niche.

It's really sad.

Put some interesting people on the air, irrespective to their POLITICAL leanings. Interesting people are interesting people.

Assertions by born-again Christian talk programmers notwithstanding, what in God's name is interesting about someone who you KNOW will spout the party line day in, day out?

So predictable. SO friggin' boring. How braindead do you have to be to listen to that.

Talk radio is about ENTERTAINMENT and with a handful of exceptions, there's very little that entertaining about the current crop of squawkers. ;D

If it's not entertaining to you, so what? I find it to be entertaining and there are plenty more like me. That's why it survives as a format (and does quite well, actually). If talkradio actually sucked as bad as so many think on here, it would have been gone long ago!

I believe the original poster, rather than saying Talk Radio was BAD or LACKING IN ENTERTAINMENT, said that it does NOT promot discourse.

The problem with talk radio as we know it today is that it draws a large audience of people who do not even know that they don't know what the word discourse implies.

Talk radio as implemented today is designed to make sure that no one in their right mind would ever say out loud: "Let's look at boths sides of this issue."

Cue the food fight.

Well, to each his own...I'm coming at this from the perspective of someone in the biz - this is not, for me, about personal taste. It's about business, and the figures don't lie: the "talk radio" audience is dying off (literally), and it's not getting replaced.
