I was thinking of posting a similar thread last week, but the Right Reverend Father C. has sort of beat me to it. Look at the type of advertisers who are buying spots on radio these days. Not that it hasn't been bad for a while. Anyone remember the weight loss product company that seemed to buy entire inventories AND got every board op, producer and host to do testimonials about how great the product was? Remember when they went belly up owing millions to stations that were more than happy to sell them spots and keep extending them credit?

I look back fondly on the spots for AutoLines in Whitman.. (another bust out that left owing money for spots)and wonder where are the advertisers of what they call in economics "durable goods. I hear ads on WCAP for a local bank and think to myself finally a top tier advertiser.

"For just 50 dollars you can name a star after someone", " Like spackle or paste", "Make money in the stock market using our program", "I'll own two houses in 5 years, this will replace my current job" " It's legal, moral and ethical" "It's the biggest no brainer...".

Heck even " Come on Down" would sound good right now compared to the snake oil salesmen that the radio people have allowed to infiltrate our homes and cars.

All of the above mentioned spots are NETWORK spots. No local station (at least in my market) sells commercials to those kinds of companies.

Plus there are still plenty of quality network advertisers, such as Office Depot, Auto Zone, Visa, Geico, Wells Fargo, K-Mart etc.

Wasn't that weight-loss thing franchisees of Nutri-system? I remember they suddenly went bust here in NH 6 or 7 years ago IIRC. Half of the NH radio industry including myself was re-hydrating their food. The box tasted better.
As far as snake-oil spots, try listening to some of the doozies on XM's talk channels. Almost every one (it seems) is for some kind of new wonder-pill or financial scheme.
