Tallest Tower

My guess would be the SBA tower off CR 111 in Manorville atop "Rock Hill". Not only is it a STEEP climb up to the tower, but the tower itself is quite tall. It can be seen miles away as far as Yaphank from the LIE.
Party 105 and 98.5 WBZB are on that stick, and 107.1 WLIR may be moving there as well, since their tower in HB has a rapidly diminishing signal as one heads west away from Riverhead.
The engineer for those stations must have a rugged truck to get up there, and with ice in winter I guess it could rank up there with the "transmitter sites from hell". No paved roads, all sandy dirt roads. It's actually in the middle of county parkland.
Here's a few photos.

I miss that jingle on Party 105 about their "longer, thicker antenna". So true, it is a monster!

WMJC Is probably one of the worst xmitter sites in LI - it's in a pit, is in an area with tremendous multipath and is still not all that high. But still not as bad as the BAB "flagpole". lol

The BAB flagpole is actually somewhat better.. at least it is at the crest of a hill. MJC is down in that pit and is the worst commercial FM site on Long Island. I don't know how Greater Greed acquired the land in the late 1960's for it, but when you see the other sites that have popped up and you figure areas that were not developed, there had to be a better choice somewhere. The site was so bad that in the CTO days with the old panel antennas, you could not recieve the station at the studio on 110 in stereo without tolerating a great deal of noise.

There's a tower in North Bellmore that's West of Wantagh Pkwy, South of North Jerusalem Rd. I'm not sure if it's radio, but it seems pretty tall...does anyone know what it's transmitting? I dont think it's cell phone. Thanks.

What about WLNY's tower? If i remember correctly, im sure that was one of the tallest on Long Island. And what about Bald Hill? I know the towers on Bald Hill arent really that tall, but since they are on the hill, they must have perfect line of site up there!

I've heard that Bald Hill is the point with the highest elevation on Long Island, but perhaps someone here could confirm or correct that. I do know that the stations on Bald Hill get out pretty far. WBLI comes in great along the Jersey Shore and I even heard it while driving through Staten Island today. WALK is another powerhouse and comes in nice on my car radio in Queens as long as there's no pirate on 97.5. Even non-commercial WUSB can get out pretty far, despite having far less wattage than the other two (its antenna is higher than BLI or WALK which is on the other tower, I believe)...during the blackout of 2003, I was pulling it in all the way in Western Queens.

This is the old Double FAA towers that used to House the Radar repeater between JFK and New York Center. They used to also house the LIMARC 146.85 Repeaters many years ago.
These are no longer in use.
