Tampa Bay Play by Play

We are fortunate to have some really good play by play/color commentators on our market. Kevin Kennedy is outstanding. Had no idea of the depth he could bring to a game. On the radio side, Andy Freed and Dave Wills work well together and are very listenable. As an aside, Freed's family lived next to my parents home in Baltimore. Mishkin and Espo are a fun listen. The Chief and Peckham are pros. My favorite, though, was John Kelly from the initial Lightning season. LVU carried Lightning games back then. Had the pleasure of meeting Kelly and made the comment that he brought real excitment to the radio broadcasts. His reaction was unique and caught me by surprise. He lit up and asked "do you really think so, thanks, I appreciate you saying that". He did it sincerely. He went on "I try, hope it comes across like that". Here's a guy who has done national broadcasts and the son of a hockey play by play legend. Really impressed me, obvioulsy. It surprised me at how appreciative he was that someone would compliment him. Found that to be true of all hockey guys. Like country singers, they are down to earth and regular people. In fact, the deal to carry the Lightning was a result of Espo calling me one day and saying that his kitchen radio picks up LVU-FM and doesn't get the AM flagship. Do me a favor and carry the games. How can you say no to that?
