Tampa Bay Radio Ratings

It's a shame WSMR has such a limited presence in Tampa. In Sarasota-Bradenton, its home market, WSMR performs rather well.

However, is it listening for WSMR-FM, or specifically W280DW. Is that distinction made in the ratings?

Either way, WSMR's 88.1 signal does not make it up to Tampa, and the translator on 103.9 is not all that strong, and barely reaches outward through all of Hillsborough County. In fact, just this morning, I heard another station trying to overpower W280DW at my home in Thonotosassa.

Ratings for translators of commercial stations are always combined with those of the originating AM, FM or HD signals.

As for Sarasota, neither Cox or Beasley subscribe to the Sarasota ratings, so none of their stations are shown. WHPT does very well in Sarasota, but is not shown.

You will not hear WSMR anywhere on 88.1 but the only full-power station in the entire state of Florida on their translator's frequency is "The Bee" in Fort Myers.
And speaking of Fort Myers, WGCU does pretty well in southern Sarasota county; they simulcast very little with the area's primary NPR station.
WINK has the strongest Fort Myers signal in Sara-Mana, but they do not show at all.
WWBA's day signal is so strong in downtown Sarasota that their distorted second harmonic is audible in a few places.

. Seems like for a long time WFUS 103.5 and WQYK 99.5 were running neck and neck in their country formats, but it seems that at least in this book; WQYK has regained the lead and their signal (99.5) is not quite as strong as WFUS’s.

In many place the best way to listen to WSMR is on the HD-2 of WUSF.
When in S.E. St Pete and downtown St. Petersburg area, I generally get good enough reception to light the Stereo light and the signal is strong enough (generally) to activate the RDS scroll; that said there are times when I can hear WUFT 89.1 out of Gainesville trying to break through, at those times, I’m glad I have an HD radio to pick up the WUSF HD-2 stream.

However it’s a much bleaker picture when in Ridge Manor East; the Orlando and Tampa HD streams come in fine most of the time outside, but inside, I have to place the radio in just the right part of the house with the external antenna in just the right position to receive the HD2 and HD3 streams. The only HD2 stream I get inside the house consistently, regardless of where the radio is, is WJUF 90.1 out of Inverness and for some strange reason they have Classical 24 on both their HD2 and HD3! There is Wi-Fi; but Spectrum seems to have had some issues with Wi-Fi outages and cable in this area the last several months. :(
