Tampa Bay's AM Stations

I am not from Tampa Bay Area but I am from north fla big bend But I got WDAE-(620) and WMGG-(820) and WWBA-(1040). But I am having touble with AM-(1470) from Tampa it's kind of 50/50 type of singal it's comes and goes.

Stations at the lower end of the band act more like long wave stations and have very good coverage. The higher in frequency you go, the less the coverage for an equal amount of power. Surprised about 1040 as they are only about 3700 watts ND days. 620 is 10 kw and 820 is 50kw days. 610 out of Miami used to come in this are very well till HD radio on 620 trashed it.

sbe1 hit the nail on the head; stations at the lower end of the a.m. band have much better coverage. On base at NAS Pensacola I could even receive 930 out of Sarasota clearly during the day. 1470 is licensed to Dunedin(just north of Clearwater) and their 5,000 watt tower is just a few hundred yards east of U.S. Hwy 19 at Curlew Rd and their signal is good, really good for about 20- 25 miles during the day and then there seems to be a sudden drop off; I don't even receive 1470-WHBO that well in S.E. St. Petersburg during the day and when they drop to 500 watts at sunset, forget it.

WDAE- 620 between it's frequency and the fact that they have good conductivity with their towers being on a causeway connecting St. Petersburg and Tampa has a very good signal; I've received them south of Cuba at night.

Have you been able to receive 680 (religious Spanish) and/or WGUL- 860 (political talk) in the Big Bend area or do the stations in New Orleans (690 and 870) prevent that? Also during the day you might be able to receive WFLF - 540 am (they i.d. as WFLA). 540 is licensed to Pine Hills/Orlando, but tower is in Lake county. Also you might want to see if you can receive 570 (Salem owned religious) over the 570 out of Cuba.

drt,

I'm about 5 miles east of Tallahassee, Fla., and decided to see what I could pick up today..

Nothing on 570, 680 or 860; WOOF-AM 560 out of Dothan, Ala;

FLorida State Unive has a 10 watt TIS on 530. At about 7 miles away, I'm on the fringe, but can hear it.

WDAE 620 was quite strong, and listenable if you're into sports.

820 was quite strong.

WWBA 1040 was receivable but the format bored me..didn't stay there long

I picked up 1470, but it was very weak.

Also 930 AM out of Bainbridge, GA comes in here somewhat, I think they are 5kw during the day.

We have locals on 1070, 1270, 1330, 1410 and 1450; rimshots from South Ga., (Thomasville and Cairo) on 730, 790, 1020.

Quincy's 1230 appears to be silent.

I used to listen to the old WSUN Country on 620 in the old days.

A few folks used to complain about WTAN 1340 interfering with 1330's signal here back when I worked at 1330.

Seems like Tampa's AMs are as bland as our AMs..sigh..

Hi Alan,

thanks for the dx report from just east of Tallahassee.

I'm surprised you were able to pick up 1470-WHBO-sports out of Dunedin. 620-WDAE-sport does have a great daytime signal, but at night the signal is directed to the south. I know there used to be a 1470 in Claxton, Ga, I figured that would come in there.

Sigh..... but you're right about one of the nation's top 20 markets having bland am (and the fm is pretty bland as well); no all news station for news junkies like myself, but if you're into sports there are three all sports stations, plus several others that carry the Tampa Bay Bucs and the Devil Rays (now called the Rays).

On the AM band in this market, ClearChannel, Salem and CBS pretty well control everything (all the major players) and on the FM band, ClearChannel, Cox and CBS control all the major stations.

And of course, the reverse. In central Pinellas County (daytime), 550 WASG, Atmore, AL; 870 WWL, New Orleans; 1060 WLNO New Orleans; 1190 WBSL, Bay St. Louis, MS; and 1620 WNRP, Gulf Breeze, FL are all audible.

I live in East Central Fl.
At Night
I get 620 OK and 1010 sometimes with some bleeding of 1010 WINS New York.
Even though we have a strong 1060 during the day I get 1060 KYW Philly.

These are the Tampa Bay's AM stations that can reach the Big Bend/Tallahassee area. WDAE-620 WMGG-820 WWBA-1040. AM 1470 singal is not as good as WWBA's singal..
