Tampa: CBS/Beasley swap in the works?

The voting web site is laughable.... from the actual web polling system they're using to the generic as heck names and voiceovers. It sounds so stupid I'd be embarrassed if I was them.

Well after the Christmas format concluded there's now variety format on WHFS. The “format tests” are still running though.

This is so awesome. Finally we get some excitement around here... and the Bone's ratings have been slipping steadily... this is going to make for a great radio war. I can't wait.

It'll be interesting to see how long Bubba lasts there, considering Beasley got rid of Neil Rogers down in Miami back in '09 on WQAM. Perhaps Beasley has gotten better with time...

Apples and oranges...

The Beasleys wanted Neil off the air because they wanted WQAM to be all-sports (he was general interest/topical) after they made him a offer that was half of his previous salary. They must have later regretted making him any kind of offer; that's why he became a "consultant" (if you believe that nonsense). Bubba is no Neil Rogers. He draws a different type of listener than Neil did.

I guess today is a new day with Beasley Broadcasting. At 10AM they pulled the plug on CBS Sports Radio on WHFS 1010. That means that I can eliminate another AM station that has mindless talk. I guess they had to do it to compete with WWBA. Lets see who has the least amount of audience. Nice going Beasley.

When I was out in the car around midnight, I remembered to check. 98.7 was still playing a very random mix of music. They went from a 60's country ballad to some cornball newer song that I vaguely recognized. 1010 was playing qute possibly the worst brokered financial show I've ever heard. The audio was really quiet and it sounded like the host was confused, he kept asking his producer how much time he had, without saying much else... so I turned it off. I am still cautiously optimistic that this is going to get interesting.

Just read about 1010's changes. Simulcasting Biz Talk from another market. Probably the best thing for 1010 in a while.

Meanwhile Q105's PD is out. And then Q105's delayed appearance on 98.7 this morning for a while? Very odd timing.

You're keeping it interesting but please, Beasley, make all the drawn-out attention grabbing rhetoric worth something to the average TB listener/advertiser in the end. Please. You have the opportunity to polish one turd of a signal/station's reputation into something better.

I am an odd person, but I would rather listen to financial talk, than sports talk... but that's just me. They could turn it into something interesting I suppose, I put it on my presets so I can check in from time to time.

98.7's signal is pretty good for what it is. I definitely wouldn't be ashamed to be on that stick. It sounds great in the parts of the bay area that are the most populated, and it has a really clean sounding signal. They are claiming that they are going to air a format that has "never been done before"... I'm skeptical, but I'll be listening...

You're right...it's just you. Even in NYC, the financial capital of the world, WBBR barely gets a 1 share, and it's on a 50KW signal. The financial talk format generally doesn't build cume.

They should sell 1010 and IF they really want an AM, buy 1380 from Disney. It's for sale and totally would have been a better signal for sports; however I get the feeling that Beasley wants nothing to do with sports or the 1010 signal. It'll probably just be automated and brokered.

As for the brief Q105 simulcast, that's interesting. Totally could have been a wiring or signal transmission test for a brief simulcast at some point this weekend Something is up and for some reason All Access in their daily news email hinted at some kind of announcement TODAY (Friday). If there was going to be some kind or signal swap or shakeup, you would think that announcements would have been coming by now. Q105, Wild, Maxima, and QYK seem to be proceeding as nothing is on the horizon; aside from some of the talent being dismissed. IF Q is moving, which I'm not one to believe they are, it seems to me the announcements of what to come should have come on December 26. Q105 is the radio host of First Friday in downtown St. Pete tonight. Maybe something comes down at 5pm and we find out something then.

I've really been enjoying 98.7's stunt format, I wish they would have included a selection on their poll to vote for that. It may be all mainstream stuff, but at least there is some variation. I just had to drive to Oldsmar, during the trip they went from Stevie Wonder to 80's rock, to Ceelo Green, to a live Lynyrd Skynyrd, to Bruno Mars, to Simply Red, and then some folky stuff. If they actually did that on a regular basis, I would listen all the time. It really cuts down on listener fatigue, but I'm the kind of guy who can appreciate a lot of different kinds of music, I dunno how that flies with everyone else. I think if it was up to me, I would have Bubba in the morning, some other recognizable name in the afternoon, and eclectic music the rest of the time.

It's all good until "Muskrat Love" comes on (yup...they played it).

Ker's Wing House (through a press release) seems to have let the cat out of the bag, saying Bubba will indeed end up on WHFS 98.7 (Beasley has not confirmed this, though):

Regarding 1010, when something like this happens, what becomes of any commitments that the station had to air specific programming? Would it have just been coincidental that a "contract" with CBS sports would have expired? Would Beasley have to find other stations to carry orphaned programming? What about the Super Bowl? Didn't CBS sports have the radio package for that? What about the USF Bulls? Will WUSF carry the games (LOL:))? WSMR might get better ratings...

About doing brokered programming... Is there THAT much money in running broadcasting that NO ONE will listen to? Wouldn't they do better to pick up some underserved music format (60's oldies, Swing, Classic Country) and just slap that on?

Awhile back I read an article that said they will continue to air USF sports on 1010 until some solution can be worked out, and that they might just continue to air USF sports for awhile. I believe the contract extends for another 2 years.

There still is a big demand for brokered radio on the AM band. The last two AM's I worked at were brokered at least some of the time, and we had a steady stream of businesses, wanabees, and whackadoos who wanted to spend $$$ for airtime for their nonsense. It's a great format for the station owner because you don't have to do squat and you don't have get any ratings, and people still give you money.
