I remember taking a $10 an hour board op job and ending up as PD in four months! You gotta be willing, and prepared, to take a step back from time to time. Good luck!

Jeff,

Just a comment on Accent Radio Network. This is a small but profitable network that is run by a small group of very young, very smart people. It started when a company that was buying time on Chuck Harders, Peoples Radio Network lost their show when Chuck shut the network down.

My former board opp who also worked on the companies show was asked by the company (a nutritional company called Daniel Chapter One). How they could keep their show going.

My board opp a young man (about 20 at the time) said, well I can build a network in my home and that’s just what he did. Today the Network is housed in two buildings on Jay’s property in north Florida and employs a small but motivated group of young folks who know that there is nothing they can not do.

Check out their web page at www.accentradionetwork.com. They are an incredible group of broadcasters and I am proud to know them.

Ahh, THERE are some names that recall the very best of brokered programming: Chuck Harder, and Daniel Chapter One. A crook and a kook. ::) "Hey Dahctah Dum-Dum!!" This is definitely the network to be on, and they have a slot open right after the Stockstrologer Show, where bird feces and tea leaves are used to predict which way the stock market is going today... Great radio for the infirm of mind and purpose. Go sell 'em!

Now Mister News..let's be fair. The Accent Radio Network is a viable venue to place programming..However the list of stations is..to be blunt, rather unimpressive. So were most of Chuck's stations. Chuck Harder eventually went to "Free To Air" satellite TV because he could not find another investor or anyone who wanted to give him another shot. FTA satellite is a joke. No programming anyone cares to really sit down and watch (much like regular TV) but one needs to puchase the "special dish" and a "special reciever" in order to see it..And guess who will sell you one? Yup, Chuck.

To again be fair I heard that he had some major medical issues, and was preparing a network aimed at the handicapped, and I was really interetsed in helping him out..I sent e-mails, and tried several ways to contact Chuck harder, and never got so much as a "thanks but nope"

I say if a person wants to launch something like this he should at least consider taking free talent where he can get it, and nothing from Mr Harder.

But back to TAN TALK. This is a real radio station that CAN be heard in a good part of the Tampa Bay metro. Yes you have to "want it" in some locations, and fight the hash, and interference, but there are a lot of people who CAN hear it. If fltalk has a show that people will want to listen to, then TEST it here, and present some success story to a potantial employer..NOT a list of stations generated by a program supplier posing as a "network". I step aside and congratulate the Accent Radio Network..they are managing to keep the lights on.

However this is unmeasurable radio at best, and just becasue one HAS a "show" on the "network" doesn't mean that anyone will clear it, and actually run it..or am I out of line?

Mike Serio..help me out here...I have to go. The "Invention Wizard Show" is on the Acdcent Network tonight..and the guy is going to tell me how I can be rich by investing in his special inventions..like "Carbonated Coffee" and "Kitchen Flooring Made From Cheese"

Uh Jeff.. maybe the previous owners of the Sun Radio Network remember the way we absolutely destroyed their sterling reputation here in Tampa Bay when 760 WEND was launched back in 1988. I seem to recall a series of parody spots that we aired on WFLA. Remember the "light bulbs that never need changing" and the "cookoo clocks" and of course who could forget the "personal ear bud alarm that sounded if you nodded off while driving." They were producd by the same guy who's voicing all the weight loss spots today !!!

As for the carbonated coffee... CocaCola Blak rocks!

Back to the subject... be aware of the difference between NETWORK and PROGRAM DISTRIBUTOR.

A network will have an Affiliate Relations Department that will:
- work to secure additional affiliates
- work to promote the talent and his show
- work with the sales staff to secure advertising support on the local level

A program distributor will:
- put a programmers show up on an oddball satellite channel
- put the info about the show up on a website
- string together the few stations that clear any of their programs and call it a "network"

Let's be honest... At this point in his career, he needs experience, some name recognition and tape from a few good shows. He can buy his way onto a small local station here in town, or buy his way onto a satellite program distributor. He'll have to do all the legwork as to securing his own affiliates in the markets he wants to reach, and do all the work to sell the show... BUT they'll distribute it for him. A full-fledged network won't even look at him right now.

Hi Guys,

I wanted to respond to a few of your comments regarding the Accent Radio Network. Just to clarify, we are not affiliated with Chuck Harder or his TalkStar Radio Network. We are [somewhat distant] friends with them, but we don't work together at this time. We did buy an FTA satellite channel from them when they were doing that, in hopes of reaching more listeners, but we lost it when they shut it down. However, we are still broadcasting on main feed on Galaxy16 ComStream digital (same as NPR and others) as we have been for the last 7 years or so.

MichaelCrose: Thank you for your kind words about me, my team, and ARN.

KJCB: Yes, we did recently purchase KNAK-AM. And yes, they're a 24/7 ARN station - except for local programming and local sports. And we're looking to buy more stations. If you or anyone else knows of any for sale, please feel free to contact me by form-mail at http://www.accentradionetwork.com/contact.htm.

Jeff Laurence: Hi Jeff. I'm not sure why you're so down on ARN, but you are certainly entitled to your opinion. I hope I've not offended you in the past. Hopefully I'll have the pleasure of meeting you in person at an NAB or other radio event some day. Perhaps you may change your mind about ARN if we had the opportunity to talk sometime. In any case, let me try to clear a few things up:

"They list an Atlanta station (WSSA at 1500) and there IS NO such station..It was FUNNY to see the miserable signal coverages of some of thier affiliate stations..and that's just the start."
My apologies for not correcting this sooner. WSSA just changed their call letters to WIGO a few weeks ago. They are out of Morrow, GA. They tout themselves as an Atlanta station, but you are right, they do not cover the whole metro - only the southern most parts of Atlanta. I will have Jeremy correct the call letters and clarify the market tomorrow on that page (http://www.accentradionetwork.com/affiliates.htm). Thank you for bringing this to my attention!

"In essence you can be on multiple stations where NO one will listen as opposed to ONE station (WTAN) where someone "might" listen"
I agree with you 100%. However I know from first hand experience with WTAN and buying time on their station. In the tests that we've done, we get a far greater response from little ol KNAK in Delta, UT than we did from WTAN when we were buying time on there. If it wasn't so, we wouldn't have bought KNAK at all. Perhaps you've had different experiences when you've bought time on WTAN. And that's good too. ;)

"Additionally The Accent Radio Network doesn't appear to offer studio time, or any way to provide a real live show. It looks like they are selling time on multiple stations but only for program suppliers who can provide audio either via Internet or CD"
Actually hosts can connect to ARN live via ISDN, TieLine, Comrex Hotline, BluBox, Matrix, and/or Vector. And of course a regular POTS line too in an emergency. We can also take programming many other ways too (such as the ones you suggest above and more).

"but of course they'll sell you a studio."
Funny, but no. We're not selling studios at this time. ;)

"The "Invention Wizard Show" is on the Acdcent Network tonight..and the guy is going to tell me how I can be rich by investing in his special inventions..like "Carbonated Coffee" and "Kitchen Flooring Made From Cheese""
...You might be thinking of another network. We don't have an "investing" show on the network at this time.

Again, I hope we can meet and have lunch sometime, and hopefully you wouldn't have such a dim view of me/ARN. But in any case, I wish you and WTAN all the best.

Thank you,

Jay..no way did you offend me. And I am not down on Accent Radio Network..I said that it was and IS a viable network, but it looks more like a program distribution commpany as opposed to a "network" as Mike pointed out.

And there is an ad on your home page about building or buying a studio..I am sorry if I misunderstood your posted ad..sorry if it appeared to me that it was being sold by ARN.

Look, everyone has a right to be here, and in this particular case I am not sure what fltalk needs is a distributor as he needs a good demo, and a little more experience in a talk hosts chair. He can get some of that at WTAN without leaving town. Probably more education that listener response..but WTAN's show rates are less than booking a recording studio!

I am also glad that ARN is actualy able to take ISDN shows. And thanks again Jay for your responses here.

When I was fortunate to get the GM gig at WLVU AM/FM I made a vow to respond to every single demo, resume, etc. EVERYONE who sent me a resume or tape got a letter in return. It is shameful that stations and management do not exercise common courtesy.
Goes to show you the industry's crappy piss--- attitude to not only its listeners ( "all we care about is national ads" ) but to those who want to join it. The doors are closed. We have our spot. You 'ain't gettin' in."

Hi Jeff (& Mike),

I agree with what Mike said regarding the differences between a 'network' and a 'distributer'. However, I'd also like to point out that ARN has an affiliate relations guy: His name is Andrew McGee. And we're adding another guy very soon! But it is true that we are a smaller network, and do not have the man power that, say, Salem Communications has in that department. ;)

Also, the www.BuildARecordingStudio.com page is there just as a public service for those that want to do voice-over work, podcasts, Part-15 stations, small home studios, etc... I very often get people asking me what's the minimum amount of equipment required to do such things. So I created the page to answer a frequently asked question, and [hopefully] as an information resource [free of charge] to those who are interested. The links are there just to help cross promote both the site, ARN, and TechWatch Radio (www.TechWatchRadio.com), where we offer free tech-support for such questions on Saturdays.
