Targeted Ads - ATSC 3.0 DTV tech applied to Radio

The way I understand this is that the targeted ads are transmitted w/5G (cell phone) signals to ATSC 3.0 compatible TVs.

If advertisers really like this ad targeting system, there could be pressure to adapt it for AM/FM Radio, a special radio would detect what stations the user listens to and substitute 5G transmitted ads for the AM/FM broadcast ads.

Maybe rather than charging for these special AM/FM radios, the users could be paid to acquire them.

Won't happen. The anti-5G conspiracy theorists will see it killed.

Hmmm....Targeted Ads (let's call them TA) on Radio. It's a long shot, but it might be beneficial for the consumer. (So much for cars being about privacy). I can't wait for a voice to come on the air saying "You recently bought Item A. Customers who bought this also bought that" In all seriousness though, the consumer has better choices with TA than with general purpose ads, and it feels more personalized. Kind of like Amazon, but with radio. The thing is, as always, who is going to foot the bill for experimental technology?

As always, the consumer/end user :)

Once the infrastructure for the ATSC 3.0 DTV w/5G "TA" is set up and working, IMHO, it could be easily adapted to provide "TA" for Radio.

Consumers could be offered an AM/FM portable or car radio that does "TA" and paid say $10/month (sort of a reverse subscription). The radio could store which radio stations and at what times the user listens (maybe for the past 4 weeks) and the 5G ad infrastructure would provide the "TA".

Targeted ads under the proposed ATSC 3.0 model requires an Internet connection to the TV. Whether that's a 3G, 4G, 5G, cable modem, Starlink, DSL, or whatever. Targeted ads have zero to do with ATSC modulation over the air, because it's still only one way data.

AM/FM is a one way broadcast. Streaming has been doing targeted ads for years because the data, including what formats or types of music you prefer, are sent back to the streaming company. Fun fact: Tesla Model 3 vehicles have microphones inside the car recording everything going on, just as Alexa, or Google. That data is sent back to Tesla, who sells it to companies trying to reach you.

I'm hearing that a lot of new higher-end cars are coming with their own 4G connection. My rental car last year (a 2021 Jeep) had this feature, so I suspect it's only a matter of time before every car will have a little 4G or 5G antenna inside it, of which it can send information about your preferences, etc.

I have one on my new RV, but don't want to pay AT&T for the $130 account setup fee, then $29.99 per month. That, and AT&T is evil anyway.

AT&T is so expensive, I had to find somewhere else to try.
